11. Prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV-1 by antiretroviral treatment and the impact on maternal health in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Abstract : This thesis describes the results of the Mitra Plus study, including the outcome of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for preventing mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV-1 in breastfeeding women and improving HIV-free survival (Paper I), treatment outcome of women initiated on ART for life (Paper II) and reasons for poor drug adherence (Paper III) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Abstract : In sub-Saharan Africa, more than four million HIV-infected people have been initiated on antiretroviral therapy (ART); most only have access to first line-treatment, and few ART clinics can provide second- line regimens to everyone in need due to the cost of equipment to detect virologic failure and the cost of alternative drugs. Abstract : This thesis describes studies of prevention of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV-1 in breast-feeding populations in sub-Saharan Africa by perinatal and postnatal prophylactic antiretroviral therapy (ART) of mothers and infants.
