1. Managing high environmental performance? : Applying life cycle approaches and environmental certification tools in the building and real estate sectors
Abstract : The main aim of this thesis is to demonstrate and critically assess life cycle approaches’ and environmental certification (EC) tools’ potential for supporting decisions for improved environmental performance in the building and real estate sectors.Using life cycle approaches, the thesis shows that for new build and renovation cases aiming for low operational energy use that embodied global warming potential (GWP) due to material production can constitute a large portion of a building’s lifetime GWP. 2. Transcalar Design : biological principles in architecture through computational design and additive fabrication
Abstract : Architecture is currently facing a period of transformational change which is driven by an increasing awareness of sustainability imperatives combined with technological advancements in the form of digitalisation of design and fabrication processes. These issues both introduce new layers of complexity and necessitate strategies to navigate them. READ MORE

3. Choreographing Flow : A Study in Concrete Deposition
Abstract : The traditional use of concrete in architecture is fundamentally conditioned by the inverse relationship that exists between material and formwork. When poured into a mold, a homogenous mixture takes the shape of its container. More detailed adjustment of the structure of concrete, however, is not possible. READ MORE

4. Generative Design Exploration : Computation and Material Practice
Abstract : Today, computation serves as an important intermediary agent for the integration of analyses and the constraints of materialisation into design processes. Research efforts in the field have emphasised digital continuity and conformity between different aspects of a building project. READ MORE

5. Nanostructured Transition Metal Oxides in Cleantech Application : Gas Sensors, Photocatalysis, Self-cleaning Surfaces Based on TiO2, WO3 and NiO
Abstract : This thesis focuses on the application of nanocrystalline transition metal oxide TiO2, WO3 and NiO thin films in new “green” building technologies. Specifically, their physicochemical properties in photocatalytic, self-cleaning and gas sensing applications are studied. READ MORE
