  2. 2. Early detection of critical congenital heart defects in Sweden - with a focus on coarctation of the aorta

    Author : Katarina Lannering; Göteborgs universitet; []

    Abstract : Introduction: Despite the implementation of prenatal and neonatal screening, newborn infants with critical congenital heart defects (CCHD) remain at risk of being discharged undiagnosed, particularly newborns with coarcation of the aorta (CoA). Recent studies have suggested that perfusion index (PI) may potentially identify additional cases of CoA. READ MORE

  3. 3. On the necessity of screening and national registration of congenital cataracts

    Abstract : Objectives: The overall aim of this thesis was to contribute to improvements in the management of congenital cataract by defining the most efficient screening procedure, examining the magnitude of the morbidity rate, optimizing the timing of surgery by relating surgical outcome to age at intervention and severity of visual deprivation and furthermore by evaluating costs versus consequences of introducing the most efficient screening procedure found, on a national basis.Methods: Paper I: 72 children born between 1992 and 1998 in the Stockholm County Council region, Västra Götaland and Halland county, Linköping-Motala, Malmö, and Lund, who had surgery for congenital cataract before the age of one year were included in a retrospective study. 4. 4. Pulse oximetry: Evaluation of a potential tool for early detection of critical congenital heart disease

    Author : Anne de-Wahl Granelli; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : pulse oximetry; duct-dependent; newborn screening; congenital heart disease; perfusion index;

    Abstract : Background: About one third of newborns with life-threatening congenital heart disease leave newborn nurseries without the problem being recognized, and risk death or serious damage from circulatory collapse. The main aim of this thesis has been to evaluate if routine newborn screening with pulse oximetry could improve early in-hospital detection of newborns with duct-dependent circulation (DDC).
