    Abstract : Serum amyloid A protein (SAA) is an acute phase protein that has recently gained increasing interest as a potential marker for disease and treatment monitoring. We investigated SAA and CRP levels in (a) patients with various common infectious diseases (n=98), (b) patients with pyelonephritis (n=37) versus patients with cystitis (n=32), (c) healthy individuals of varying ages (n=231), (d) very immature newborn infants with or without nosocomial infections (NIs) (n=72) and (e) patients with bacterial infections treated with cefuroxime (n=81). 2. 2. Human newborn behavior during exposure to maternal and other odors

    Author : Heili Varendi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Olfaction appears to play a pivotal role in immediate postnatal interactions between mammalian mothers and their offspring. The present study examined: (1) whether and how the newborn human infant and its mother communicate by means of olfaction; (2) the role of amniotic fluid (AF) and breast odors in such communication; (3) olfactory learning by neonates. 3. 3. Care of the newborn in Uganda : studies of the use of simple affordable effective interventions

    Author : Romano Nkumbwa Byaruhanga; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Neonatal mortality; newborn; hypothermia; skin to skin; Uganda;

    Abstract : Background: There are evidence based cost effective interventions available, which could decrease neonatal mortality, if scaled up and delivered under ideal conditions. Aim: To determine the causes of perinatal deaths, risk factors for neonatal hypothermia and explore the acceptability and feasibility of recommended perinatal practices in hospital and community settings in Uganda.     Keywords : Breastfeeding outcome; early suckling; maternal temperature; mother-child interaction; newborn infant temperature; sensitive period; separation; skin-to-skin contact; swaddling.;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to explore the role of closeness versus separation on infant and maternal temperature adaptation, breastfeeding outcome and mother-infant interaction. In addition, we aimed to study a potential influence of swaddling on all outcomes measured. READ MORE

  5. 5. Mother and newborn adaptations after birth : influence of administration of oxytocin and epidural analgesia during labour

    Keywords : Blood pressure; breastfeeding; epidural analgesia; labour; maternal personality pattern; newborn temperature; oxytocin; postpartum; prolactin; skin-to-skin contact.;

    Abstract : Aims: This thesis explores postpartum physiological and psychological adaptations in mothers and newborns in the short-and long-term perspective. The thesis further explores the influence of labour ward interventions, such as epidural analgesia (EDA) and exogenous administration of oxytocin on these adaptations. READ MORE
