  1. 6. Evidence and context : knowledge translation for newborn health in low-income settings

    Author : Anna Bergström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Neonatal hypothermia;

    Abstract : Background: Neonatal mortality (death within the first 28 days of life), presently accounts for 41% of the global burden of under-5 deaths. Estimates indicate that about two-thirds of the 3.1 million neonatal deaths could be averted with an increased implementation of existing evidence-based practices. READ MORE

  2. 7. Immediate skin-to-skin contact for very preterm and low birth weight infants : from newborn physiology to mortality reduction

    Author : Agnes Linnér; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : There is a contrast between the incidence of low birth weight and the contents and outcomes of neonatal care in high- versus middle- and low-income countries. Most of the neonatal deaths worldwide are attributed to low birth weight, occur within the first three postnatal days and can be prevented without intensive care. READ MORE

  3. 8. Neonatal water and heat exchange : The influence of environmental factors and infant maturity

    Author : Gunnar Sjörs; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pediatrics; Neonatal; transepidermal water loss; respiratory water loss; radiant heat; heat exchange; water loss; incubators; Pediatrik; Paediatric medicine; Pediatrisk medicin; pediatrik; Pediatrics;

    Abstract : The environment provided by commonly used infant incubators, the effect of radiantheat and exposure to cold air on the exchange of water and heat between newborninfants and their environment, and the water loss through the skin of infants born at24-25 weeks of gestation were investigated. The evaporation of water from the skinwas measured by the gradient method. READ MORE

  4. 9. On evaluation of organ damage in perinatal asphyxia : an experimental and clinical study

    Author : Mathias Karlsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Perinatal asphyxia; hypoxia-ischemia; hypothermia; pig; lactate dehydrogenase; aminotransferases;

    Abstract : Leakage of intracellular enzymes such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) signalling multi organ dysfunction (MOD) is seen together with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) after perinatal asphyxia. Hypothermia (HT) can attenuate HIE following perinatal asphyxia and hypoxia-ischemia (HI) but the neuroprotective efficacy falls dramatically the longer the delay in initiating HT. READ MORE

  5. 10. On neonatal asphyxia : clinical and animal studies including development of a simple, safe method for therapeutic hypothermia with global applicability

    Author : Linus Olson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Recent randomized clinical trials show that hypothermia can decrease brain dysfunction in newborn infants at risk for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. One goal of the present study was to develop an alternative to current relatively complex and expensive cooling methods dependent on electricity and continuous water supply. READ MORE
