  1. 1. Genome Evolution and Niche Differentiation of Bacterial Endosymbionts

    Author : Kirsten Maren Ellegaard; Siv Andersson; Andrés Moya; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; niche; habitat; endosymbiont; gut microbiome; honey bee; Wolbachia; comparative; genomics;

    Abstract : Most animals contain chronic microbial infections that inflict no harm on their hosts. Recently, the gut microflora of humans and other animals have been characterized. However, little is known about the forces that shape the diversity of these bacterial communities. READ MORE

  2. 2. The role of regeneration in plant niche differentiation and habitat specialization

    Author : Dirk-Jan ten Brink; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; seed mass; seed size; drought; shade; seed germination; seed dormancy; seedling establishment; plant community ecology; assembly rules; habitat specialization; plant recruitment; Regeneration; niche differentiation; phylogenetic independent contrasts; plant traits; soil fertility; comparative ecology;

    Abstract : To predict the effects of environmental change and nature management on the distribution of plant species, it is crucial to understand the mechanisms of plant niche differentiation and habitat specialization. The importance to habitat specialization of particular plant traits and requirement of the regenerative phase of the plants life has received scanty interest. READ MORE

  3. 3. Causes and consequences of niche differentiation between color morphs of pygmy grasshoppers

    Author : Einat Karpestam; Anders Forsman; Birgitta Tullberg; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; color polymorphism; visual predators; Tetrix subulata; differential habitat use; niche; thermoregulation; feeding preferences; stable isotopes; Evolutionary Biology; Evolutionsbiologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I used the color polymorphic pygmy grasshopper, Tetrix subulata, as a model system in order to investigate the degree of niche differentiation between alternative color morphs that are present within a single population. First, I hypothesized that individuals belonging to different color morphs differ in their innate food preference due to somewhat dissimilar physiology, and in their actual food consumption due in part to differential habitat use. 4. 4. Soil phosphorus – a multidimensional resource that plays an important role for grassland plant species richness

    Author : Jakob Sandberg; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; niche dimension; nutrient limitation; niche differentiation; competition; soil nitrogen; soil phosphorus; plant diversity; species richness; Grassland; land use; landscape scale;

    Abstract : The semi-natural grassland habitats contain an important part of the plant diversity in Europe. Changes in farming practices have lead to drastic decreases in plant species richness. The aim of the present thesis is to contribute to the knowledge about mechanisms governing the plant species richness in grasslands with emphasis on soil nutrients. READ MORE

  5. 5. Stem cells : proliferation, differentiation, migration

    Author : Anna Falk; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Embryonic stem cell; adult neural stem cells; proliferation; differentiation; migration;

    Abstract : A stem cell is demanding and requires precise conditions to carry out its unique tasks. This includes proliferation as an undifferentiated stem cell, differentiation to more mature cell types, migration through tissue to its final destination, and functional integration into the cellular network.
