  1. 21. Dynamics of Microbial Genome Evolution

    Author : Sean Hooper; Guy Perriére; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : The success of microbial life on Earth can be attributed not only to environmental factors, but also to the surprising hardiness, adaptability and flexibility of the microbes themselves. They are able to quickly adapt to new niches or circumstances through gene evolution and also by sheer strength of numbers, where statistics favor otherwise rare events. READ MORE

  2. 22. Hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha : dependent and independent regulation of hematopoietic stem cells and leukemia

    Author : Camilla Halvarsson; Jan-Ingvar Jönsson; Mikael Sigvardsson; Kamil Kranc; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis has studied the role of low oxygen levels, or hypoxia, in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and how, at the molecular level, it regulates stem cell maintenance and protects against oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS). HSCs reside within the bone marrow in specific niches created by a unique vascularized environment, which is suggested to be hypoxic and crucial for HSCs by maintaining a quiescent state of cell cycle and by redirecting metabolism away from the mitochondria to glycolysis. 3. 23. Response mechanisms of normal hematopoietic cells and leukemic cells to genotoxic agents and novel therapeutic strategies

    Author : Andreas Hedblom; Malmö Experimentell cancerforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Hematopoietic stem cells; genotoxic damage; cell cycle; leukemia; heme oxygenase; differentiation;

    Abstract : Hematopoiesis is initiated by a rare population of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) in the bone marrow (BM). HSCs give rise to red blood cells and white blood cells of myeloid and lymphoid lineages. READ MORE

  4. 24. Host-parasite interactions in space and time

    Author : Franziska Hildebrandt; Johan Ankarklev; Volker T. Heussler; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Malaria; liver-stage infection; Toxoplasma; host-parasite interactions; spatial transcriptomics; single-cell omics; single-cell Dual-seq; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : Unicellular parasites of the apicomplexan phylum have a considerable effect on global health and agriculture. Two prominent examples of this phylum include malaria causing parasites of the Plasmodium genus and the widely prevalent parasite Toxoplasma gondii. READ MORE

  5. 25. To defend or to offend? : Bacterial defence and competition systems

    Author : Danna Lee; Sanna Koskiniemi; Marjan van der Woude; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : bacterial defence systems; bacterial competition systems; toxin-antitoxin systems; colicin; contact-dependent growth inhibition CDI ; type VI secretion system T6SS ; Rearrangement hotspot Rhs proteins; CRISPR; horizontal gene transfer; antibiotic resistance; Salmonella; Enterotoxigenic E. coli ETEC ; probiotics; synthetic biology.;

    Abstract : Bacteria are prokaryotic microorganisms that can be found in all niches of the biosphere. Bacteria must constantly evolve in order to survive and adapt to their environments. Defence systems and competition systems play a vital role in ensuring the survival of bacteria. READ MORE
