6. Airway responsiveness and exhaled nitric oxide : Studies in asthma and Sjögren's syndrome
Abstract : In this thesis, four different types of provocation agents: methacholine, adenosine, cold air and mannitol were used to study different aspects of the airway responsiveness profile in asthma and Sjögren's syndrome. Exhaled nitric oxide (NO) and markers of eosinophil activation, serum eosinophil peroxidase (S-EPO) and eosinophil cationic protein (S-ECP) were measured. READ MORE

7. The hyperosmolar airway : Mechanisms of reduced response to nitric oxide
Abstract : Inhaled nitric oxide (NO) relaxes smooth muscle of the airways and of pulmonary blood vessels and is used to treat lung diseases where the pulmonary vessels are constricted. NO has also been tested as a bronchodilator in asthmatic patients. READ MORE

8. Studies on nitric oxide in the respiratory system
Abstract : Nitric oxide (NO) is formed in biological tissues and has regulatory functions in many organ systems. Endogenous NO has been found in exhaled air and NO is considered to have effects on the pulmonary circulation and bronchial tone, and to be one of the mediators for the circulatory adaptation at birth. 9. Respiratory distress syndrome aspects of inhaled nitric oxide, surfactant and nasal CPAP
Abstract : Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) still represents one of the main problems in the treatment of premature infants. Despite the use of surfactant replacement therapy RDS adds to the need for endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation (M). READ MORE

10. Lung mechanics and airway inflammation in murine models of asthma
Abstract : Allergic asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways and is characterized by eosinophilic inflammation and increased airway reactivity. In the studies presented in this thesis, lung mechanics and measurements of airway reactivity were assessed in anaesthetized tracheostomized mice by using an animal ventilator (flexiVent®). READ MORE
