  1. 16. Nitric oxide : a surrogate marker of bowel inflammation

    Author : Claudia I Reinders; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The gas nitric oxide (NO) is a pluripotent biological messenger involved in numerous physiological and pathological processes in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In the intestinal mucosa NO is synthesized from the amino acid L-arginine via a reaction catalyzed by NO synthase (NOS). READ MORE

  2. 17. Sensory neuropeptides and nitric oxide in nasal vascular regulation

    Author : Johan Rinder; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Sensory nerves; neuropeptides; nasal mucosa; nitric oxide; vascular regulation; acoustic rhinometry; NK1-receptors; CGRP-receptors; vanilloid receptors; capsaicin; lactic acid; exercise; a-adrenoceptor agonists; pig; human.;

    Abstract : The role of sensory neuropeptides and nitric oxide in vascular regulation was investigated in the pig nasal mucosa in vivo using arterial blood flow measurements and acoustic rhinometry for analysis of capacitance function. Moreover, the effects of heavy physical exercise, a-adrenoceptor agonists, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition, L-arginine, nitric oxide (NO) gas, histamine and capsaicin on nasal cavity NO levels and nasal cavity volume, were investigated in healthy subjects. 3. 18. Adaptation to ischemia with special emphasis on nitric oxide

    Author : Shinichi Tokuno; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Nitric oxide (NO) may play an essential role for maintenance of cardiac function and perfusion. Endothelial dysfunction of atherosclerotic vessels may aggravate cardiac ischemia/reperfusion injury. READ MORE

  4. 19. Regional pulmonary vasoreactivity, with special reference to nitric oxide, prostacyclin and body posture

    Author : Danguolé Rimeika; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Regional pulmonary perfusion; nitric oxide; prostacyclin; NOS-inhibition; COX-inhibition; shunt; one-lung ventilation;

    Abstract : The primary aim of the study was to investigate possible mechanisms behind the improved arterial oxygenation in ventilator-treated patients with acute lung injury (ALI) or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) when turned into prone position. A secondary aim was to discover new knowledge of possible importance for treatment of patients with oxygenation problems in intensive care and during anesthesia. READ MORE

  5. 20. Role of MAP Kinases in the Life and Death of Beta-cells

    Author : Natalia Makeeva; Nils Welsh; Godfried Roomans; Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; diabetes; beta-cell; p38 MAPK; nitric oxide; apoptosis; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : The development of diabetes mellitus depends on the balance between beta-cell proliferation and death. As mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) may control this balance, the aim of this study was to investigate the events leading to MAPK activation in beta-cells and the consequences of these events.
