1. Dynamic Modeling of Nitrifying Trickling Filters
Abstract : Trickling filters, one kind of biofilm reactors, for removal of nitrogen in municipal wastewater are presently increasing in number in Sweden. For improved control and operation of wastewater treatment plants, where such reactors are used, dynamic models describing their behavior are necessary. READ MORE

2. Microbial communities in anammox and nitrifying biofilms
Abstract : Excess of nitrogen in water bodies causes eutrophication. One important source of nitrogen is the effluent from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Nitrogen in wastewater is most commonly removed by nitrification-denitrification. READ MORE

3. Nitrification and Nitrifying Bacterial Communities in Coniferous Forest Soils : Effects of Liming and Clear-Cutting
Abstract : This thesis deals with the effects of liming and clear-cutting on nitrification in hemi-boreal and northern temperate coniferous forest soils. The approach has been to study both the potential nitrification and the community structure of the ammonia-oxidising bacteria, which carry out the first step of autotrophic nitrification. READ MORE

4. On Modeling the Dynamics of Fixed Biofilm Reactors. With focus on nitrifying trickling filters
Abstract : Fixed biofilms, which are matrix-enclosed populations of organisms attached to solid surfaces, are increasingly used in environmental biotechnology processes, such as the treatment of potable water and wastewater. This thesis aims to give some insight into the dynamic modeling of biofilms and fixed biofilm reactors, with a focus on nitrifying trickling filters (NTFs) for the treatment of wastewater. READ MORE

5. Denitrification in a Non-nitrifying Activated Sludge System Employing Recirculation from a Tertiary Nitrification Unit
Abstract : A non-nitrifying, denitrifying activated sludge system has been demonstrated to give high denitrification rates and to be a useful component in a municipal wastewater treatment plant where partial nitrogen removal is required. One useful configuration is where clarified effluent from a non-nitrifying activated sludge system is nitrified in a tertiary nitrification unit and recirculated to the activated sludge system for denitrification.
