11. Proteasome targeted therapy in arthritis models : effects on pain and inflammation
Abstract : The ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS) regulates numerous cellular functions by selectively degrading cellular proteins. It controls activation of the transcription factor NF-ĸB which is involved in the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators. The UPS regulates neuronal signalling by controlling levels of synaptic proteins during chronic pain. READ MORE

12. Structural and functional studies on nerve regeneration in the rat
Abstract : Peripheral nerves cannot be repaired, but they may be helped to regenerate. The results of surgical treatment of nerve injuries remain disappointing, however. This is a biological rather than a technical challenge. READ MORE

13. Role of spinal and peripheral HMGB1 in arthritis-induced pain
Abstract : Chronic pain is one of the most debilitating and repeatedly reported symptoms by rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Despite good disease control achieved with disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), joint pain remains a major problem for a subgroup of patients. READ MORE

14. Neurons and glia in the peripheral nervous system : interactions in health and disease
Abstract : The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is composed of nerves and ganglia that connect the brain and the spinal cord (the central nervous system, CNS) to the outside world. The nerves contain the extensions (axons) of both sensory and motor neurons, which allow us to detect and respond to different stimuli. READ MORE

15. The serotonin receptor type 3 in chronic and experimental human muscle pain
Abstract : The main aim of this thesis was to gain a better understanding of the influence of serotonin on chronic craniofacial muscle pain. The thesis comprised a basic science part and a human experimental part. READ MORE
