  1. 1. Movements in the dark : flying, landing and walking in insects

    Author : THERESE REBER; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; insect; vision; light intensity; bumblebee; retina; behavioural adaptation; flight; landing; dung beetle; nocturnal adaptation; sky compass; straight-line orientation;

    Abstract : Flying, as well as walking insects rely on vision to regulate locomotion, even in the dark when the visual system is much less reliable. To manage visual control of these behaviours at low light intensities, many insects have evolved optical adaptations, such as larger facet lenses and wider rhabdoms, and neural adaptations, such as spatial and temporal summation, to increase their visual sensitivity. 2. 2. Urban Climate and Air Pollution in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

    Author : Jenny Lindén; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sub-Saharan Africa; Sahel; semi arid; nocturnal cooling; urban vegetation; evening evaporative cooling; cooling rate; atmospheric stability; thermal wind; carbon monoxide; particulate matter; road dust; exposure differences;

    Abstract : ABSTRACT Africa has recently been singled out by UN Habitat as the fastest urbanizing continent in the world. The most extreme case was found in the Sahelian city of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, where the population is expected to almost double over the next ten years. READ MORE

  3. 3. Diversity and Limits of Colour Vision in Terrestrial Vertebrates

    Author : Lina Roth; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Reptiles; Dim light vision; Colour vision; Camera-type eyes; Vertebrates; Mammals; Geckos; Horses;

    Abstract : Most terrestrial vertebrates have colour vision, some perceive a less colourful world and others actually discriminate a wider colour spectrum than humans do. Still, we can all make use of the valuable colour information, which is more rigid than just brightness. READ MORE

  4. 4. Migration in anadromous brown trout

    Author : David Aldvén; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Downstream migration; Temperature; Discharge; Genetics; Growth rate; Climate change; Salmo trutta; Salmo salar; Sea trout; Salmon; Biology; Ecology;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates the anadromous migration of brown trout (Salmo trutta) with the overall aim to improve stock management within the region. Several field studies were conducted in different streams and coastal areas on the west coast of Sweden specifically aimed to evaluate environmental triggers for migration (Paper I), migration pathways and strategies (Paper III and IV) as well as the genetic differentiation of anadromous populations of brown trout (Paper V).
