  1. 1. Compacted graphite iron : On solidification phenomena related to shrinkage defects

    Author : Björn Domeij; Attila Diószegi; Babette Tonn; Jönköping University; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Compacted graphite iron; Spheroidal graphite iron; Solidification; Microsegregation; Porosity; Kompaktgrafitjärn; segjärn; stelning; mikrosegregation; porositet;

    Abstract : An improved understanding of solidification of compacted graphite iron (CGI) is necessary to predict shrinkage related casting defects. Spheroidal graphite is not only found in ductile iron (SGI) but usually also in CGI, but its characteristics and role in this material is less understood. READ MORE

  2. 2. On the Inoculation and Graphite Morphologies of Cast Iron

    Author : Haji Muhammad Muhmond; Michael Vynnycky; Hasse Fredriksson; Peter Schumacher; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Materials Science and Engineering; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Abstract : Research was conducted to understand the nucleation mechanism of graphite flakes and nodules and the effect of various elements on the growth morphology of graphite. Investigations were started on flake graphite cast iron. The effect of S on the graphite morphology and MnS was experimentally analysed. READ MORE

  3. 3. On the mechanisms of structure formation in nodular cast iron

    Author : Magnus Wessén; KTH; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The mechanisms of structure formation in nodular cast ironhave been examined by experiments and by physical modelling. Byincorporation of models for nucleation and growth for allrelevant phases into a heat flow calculation. it is possible topredict the as-cast structure by computer simulation. READ MORE

  4. 4. Some aspects of convection as well as graphite and carbide formations during casting

    Author : Fareed Ashraf Khan; Michael Vynnycky; Pär Jönsson; Bo Rogberg; Hasse Fredriksson; Jessica Elfsberg; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; carbides; heat treatment; cast iron; ball bearing steel; casting; cooling rate; structure analysis; nodule distribution; melt stirring; nuclei; karbider; värmebehanding; gjutjärn; kullagerstål; gjutning; kylningshastighet; strukturanalys; nodulefördelning; smältrörelse; kärnor.; Metallurgical process science; Metallurgisk processvetenskap;

    Abstract : It is an established fact that segregation during casting affects the physical properties of carbon-based ferro alloys; this motivates the study of the segregation behaviour of carbon and carbide-forming solute elements. In this context, this thesis investigates two different situations: the effects of cooling rate and turbulence on the precipitation behaviour of the graphite nodules in nodular cast iron; the nature of carbide precipitation in a bearing steel grade and the effects of subsequent soaking on these carbides. 5. 5. A Study On Factor Influencing the Microstructure and Shrinkage Porosity Formation in Compacted Graphite Iron

    Author : Sadaf Vazehrad; Pär Jönsson; Attila Dioszegi; Steve Dawson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; CGI; LGI; SGI; Solidification; Microstructure; Shrinkage porosity; Eutectic colony; Microsegregation;

    Abstract : During the last decades, an intensive effort has been dedicated to introduce compacted graphite iron (CGI) for truck engine components as its intermediate graphite morphology provides an increased tensile property compared to lamellar cast iron (LGI) and a better thermal conductivity compared to nodular cast iron (SGI). However, the narrow production technology window in this cast iron grade requires increased technological discipline. READ MORE
