  1. 1. Knowledge-based speech enhancement

    Author : Sriram Srinivasan; Bastiaan Kleijn; Rainer Martin; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; speech enhancement; noise reduction; linear predictive coe±cients; autoregressive; codebooks; maximum-likelihood; Bayesian; nonstationary noise; blind source separation.; Telecommunication; Telekommunikation;

    Abstract : Speech is a fundamental means of human communication. In the last several decades, much effort has been devoted to the efficient transmission and storage of speech signals. With advances in technology making mobile communication ubiquitous, communications anywhere has become a reality. READ MORE

  2. 2. Cognition in Hearing Aid Users : Memory for Everyday Speech

    Author : Hoi Ning Elaine Ng; Jerker Rönnberg; Mary Rudner; Thomas Lunner; Kevin Munro; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Hearing aid; working memory; free recall; noise reduction; speech recognition; Hörapparat; arbetsminne; återgivning; brusreducering; taluppfattning;

    Abstract : The thesis investigated the importance of cognition for speech understanding in experienced and new hearing aid users. The aims were 1) to develop a cognitive test (Sentence-final Word Identification and Recall, or SWIR test) to measure the effects of a noise reduction algorithm on processing of highly intelligible speech (everyday sentences); 2) to investigate, using the SWIR test, whether hearing aid signal processing would affect memory for heard speech in experienced hearing aid users; 3) to test whether the effects of signal processing on the ability to recall speech would interact with background noise and individual differences in working memory capacity; 4) to explore the potential clinical application of the SWIR test; and 5) to examine the relationship between cognition and speech recognition in noise in new users over the first six months of hearing aid use. 3. 3. On Transient Noise and its Reduction in Hearing Aids

    Author : Anders Gingsjö; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; gun shots; sound exposure; speech intelligibility; signal processing; transient reduction; hearing aid; transient noise;

    Abstract : The most important property of a hearing aid is to facilitate verbal communication for hearing impaired people. However, tuning of the acoustical parameters in a hearing aid in order to optimize the speech intelligibility may result in a harsh and unpleasant sound. READ MORE

  4. 4. Counteracting Acoustic Disturbances in Human Speech Communication

    Author : Nils Westerlund; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Speech Enhancement; Noise Reduction; Hearing Aids; Adaptive Feedback Control; Ear-Mic; Active Noise Control;

    Abstract : A signal can be said to be any information bearing unit or action carrying a message from a sender to a receiver. This definition covers a vast number of human and non-human actions, ranging from flirtation to satellite communication. This thesis deals with increasing the quality of one of the most ubiquitous human-to-human signals: Speech. READ MORE
