  1. 21. Hemodynamics of artificial devices used in extracorporeal life support

    Author : Francesco Fiusco; Lisa Prahl Wittberg; Katharine Fraser; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; computational fluid dynamics; hemorheology; platelet activation; thrombogenicity; extracorporeal membrane oxygenation; hemodynamics; Engineering Mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-saving therapy usedfor support in critical heart and/or lung failure. Patient’s blood is pumped viaan artificial lung for oxygenation outside of the body. The circuit is composedof a blood pump, cannulae for drainage and reinfusion, a membrane lung,tubing and connectors. READ MORE

  2. 22. Transporting highly concentrated slurries with centrifugal pumps : the thickened minerals tailings example

    Author : Thord Wennberg; Magnus Fahlgren; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Mineralteknik; Mineral Processing;

    Abstract : New technologies are continuously considered for the handling and deposition of tailings. With thickened tailings only a fraction of water used conventionally reaches the disposal area, thus limiting sizes of water holding dam facilities and areas to be rehabilitated. Heat may also be recovered with direct water circulation from the thickening. READ MORE

  3. 23. Numerical ice sheet modeling : Forward and inverse problems

    Author : Gong Cheng; Lina von Sydow; Per Lötstedt; Nina Kirchner; Irina Tezaur; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ice sheet modeling; finite element method; grounding line migration; inverse problems; adjoint method; Scientific Computing; Beräkningsvetenskap;

    Abstract : Ice sheets have strong influence on the climate system. Numerical simulation provides a mathematical tool to study the ice dynamics in the past and to predict their contribution to climate change in the future. Large scale ice sheets behave as incompressible non-Newtonian fluid. READ MORE

  4. 24. Analyzing Material Properties for Efficient Processing of Spruce to Ethanol

    Author : Magnus Wiman; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Fuel production from renewable resources will likely be a prerequisite for reducing the negative anthropogenic impact on the environment and, at the same time, ensuring future energy security. In this thesis, the conversion of typical Swedish biomass, mainly Norway spruce, to ethanol was studied. READ MORE

  5. 25. Bioparticle Manipulation using Acoustophoresis and Inertial Microfluidics

    Author : Muhammad Asim Faridi; Aman Russom; Martin Wiklund; Jonas Tegenfeldt; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biotechnology; Bioteknologi;

    Abstract : Despite the many promising advances made in microfluidics, sample preparation remains the single largest challenge and bottleneck in the field of miniaturised diagnostics. This thesis is focused on the development of sample preparation methods using active and passive particle manipulation techniques for point of care diagnostic applications. READ MORE
