  2. 2. Pharmacokinetics - Effect Relations of Glibenclamide and its Metabolites in Humans

    Author : Tony S Rydberg; Institutionen för hälsovetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; renal insufficiency.; insulin; glucose; non-insulin dependent; diabetes mellitus; pharmacodynamic modelling; pharmacodynamics; pharmaco-kinetics; HPLC method; Glibenclamide; sulphonylurea; metabolites; Pharmacological sciences; pharmacognosy; pharmacy; toxicology; Farmakologi; farmakognosi; farmaci; toxikologi;

    Abstract : Glibenclamide (Gb) is the most commonly employed sulphonylurea worldwide for the treatment of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). There has been uncertainty concerning its pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD). READ MORE

  3. 3. Secondary drug failure in non insulin dependent diabetes : on causes and aspects of treatment

    Author : Per Clauson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Non insulin dependent diabetes; treatment failure; insulin; sulphonylurea; insulin-like growth factor-I; insulin-like growth factor bindingprotein-1; insulin secretion; insulin sensitivity; insulin absorption.;

    Abstract : Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes (NIDDM) represents a major health problem with increased risk of atherosclerotic disease and early death. The grave consequences of NIDDM are partly due to inadequate and insufficient treatment. The purpose of the present study was to study the causes of treatment failure and evaluate new strategies of treatment. READ MORE

  4. 4. Hyperglycaemia and diabetic eye complications - a clinical and epidemiological study

    Author : Marianne Henricsson; Oftalmologi (Malmö); []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mortality; blindness; cataract surgery; oral antihyperglycaemic agents; hyperglycaemia; insulin treatment; non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus; diabetic retinopathy; insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus; Ophtalmology; Oftalmologi;

    Abstract : Aim: To study the relationship between hyperglycaemia and the onset/progression of retinopathy, blindness/moderate visual impairment or death, as well as the impact of improved glycaemic control on retinopathy in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Methods: Between January 1990 and October 1995 a total of 3,220 diabetic patients were enrolled in a programme for control and screening for retinopathy. READ MORE

  5. 5. Islet amyloid polypeptide : Perspectives on the storage and plasma concentration of islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) in rodent models of obesity and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and aspects of amyloidogenesis andelimination of IAPP

    Author : Arnold Leckström; Sture Falkmer; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The present study was aimed to investigate plasma concentrations and pancreatic storage of IAPP in relation to that of insulin in four different animal models with hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, obesity and/or NIDDM. The NMRI mice fed a high-fat diet for six months, the Psammomys on high-energy (HE) diet and the genetically obese (ob/ob) mice studied for one year all revealed significantly elevated plasma IAPP concentrations, while the IAPP levels were unchanged in the spontaneously diabetic GK rats during a glucose tolerance test.
