  1. 16. Principles and Models of Solid Fuel Combustion

    Author : Henrik Thunman; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; wood; single particle; modelling; fluidized bed; thermochemical conversion; fixed bed; coal; thermal conductivity; fuel loading; measurements; thermochemical properties; biofuels; combustion; grate;

    Abstract : Combustion of solid fuels stands for a substantial part of the heat and power production in the world. In this thesis different aspects related to the thermochemical conversion of solid fuels in fluidized and fixed beds are treated, such as: the combustion temperature of a fuel particle related to the surrounding temperature in a fluidized bed combustor (FBC); the fuel loading in a FBC; a transient description of the conversion of non-spherical fuel particles; the thermochemical properties and composition of volatiles released from wood; the thermal conductivity of wood during different stages of conversion; the modelling of a grate furnace; the general combustion behaviour of a fixed bed on a reciprocating or a travelling grate; and finally, the design and construction of experimental units for investigation of combustion in a fixed bed. 2. 17. Polarization-Resolved Particle Holography

    Author : Johan Öhman; Mikael Sjödahl; Erik Olsson; Per Bergström; Pietro Ferraro; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Experimentell mekanik; Experimental Mechanics;

    Abstract : In this thesis, measurement of particle fields using digital holography is the main subject. The questions investigated consider positioning, identification and sizing of nanometer and micrometer particles. The thesis explore these topics using both simulations and experimental measurements. 3. 18. DNA Compaction at Surfaces

    Author : Marité Cárdenas; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Polymer technology; Fysikalisk kemi; Physical chemistry; gränsskikt; Ytkemi; Surface and boundary layery chemistry; cationic amphiphiles; DNA; Polymerteknik; surface; biopolymers;

    Abstract : The interfacial behavior of DNA and DNA-cationic surfactant has been studied. Particular attention was paid to the type of cationic surfactant and the DNA conformation (single or double stranded) as well as the DNA length. READ MORE

  4. 19. Experimental studies of ice particle formation with tropospheric relevance

    Author : Erik Svensson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; heterogeneous nucleation; water; freezing; cloud droplets; levitation; electrodynamic balance; light scattering; oxalic acid; kaolinite; dinitrogen pentoxide;

    Abstract : In their fourth assessment report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change points out the influence of particles suspended in air, known as an aerosol, as the main uncertainty in the understanding of the climate system. Aerosols affect climate in a number of ways. READ MORE

    Abstract : Micron to millimetre sized droplets, precisely generated or sustained in controlled environment, have great potential in myriads of engineering applications functioning as the basic element to assemble metamaterials, deliver drugs, host surfactant, reduce friction and damp turbulence. The interaction of droplets from pairwise to collective levels is the most important factor in controlling these processes, yet little is known about the detailed mechanisms in various nonideal conditions.
