  1. 1. Treatment of Temporomandibular Disorders of Arthrogeneous Origin. Controlled double-blind studies of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and a stabilisation appliance

    Author : EwaCarin Ekberg; Institutionen för hälsovetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Temporomandibular Joint Disorders; Randomized Controlled Trials; Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Agents; Occlusal Splints; Treatment Outcome; Mandibular Condyle Radiography; Subtraction Technique; Radiographic Image Enhancement; Causality; Odontology; stomatology; Odontologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to prospectively evaluate the short-term effect of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (diclofenac sodium, Voltaren) and stabilisation appliance in controlled trials of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) of arthrogeneous origin. The active treatments were compared to placebo in the study of diclofenac and to a control appliance in the other study. READ MORE

  2. 2. A Drosophila Disease-Model for Transthyretin-associated Amyloidosis

    Author : Malgorzata Pokrzywa; Erik Lundgren; Damian Crowther; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; transthyretin; amyloid; amyloidosis; Drosophila; transthyretin-associated amyloidosis; Familial amyloid polyneuropathy; neurodegeneration; serum amyloid P component; Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs; drug screens; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Amyloidoses comprise a group of gain-of-toxic function protein misfolding diseases, in which normally soluble proteins in their functional state undergo conformational changes into highly organized and generally intractable thread-like aggregates, termed amyloid fibrils. These structures accumulate predominantly in the extracellular space but growing evidence suggests that amyloids may start to form intracellularly. READ MORE

  3. 3. Faecal Calprotectin Diagnostics : Focus on Primary Care and Suspected Sources of Error

    Author : Zlatica Rendek; Henrik Hjortswang; Magnus Falk; Ewa Grodzinsky; Stergios Kechagias; Mikael Lilja; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Calprotectin; Inflammatory bowel disease; Gastrointestinal disease; Primary health care; Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents; Proton pump inhibitors; Respiratory tract infection;

    Abstract : Patients with gastrointestinal symptoms often present a diagnostic challenge for general practitioners. Faecal calprotectin (FC) is commonly used as a marker of intestinal inflammation and is useful for differentiating between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), as well as for the follow-up of patients with IBD and monitoring treatment response. 4. 4. Computational studies of photodynamic drugs, phototoxic reactions and drug design

    Author : Klefah Abrahem Klefah Musa; Leif Eriksson; Nino Russo; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NSAIDs; fluoroquinolone; photodegradation; phototoxicity; drug design; DFT; TD-DFT; Biophysical chemistry; Biofysikalisk kemi; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : The most important criterion when designing new drugs or improving old ones in order to prevent side effects or at least diminish them is drug safety. Treatment of all diseases generally needs use of either topical application or systemic medications (transported in the blood) during a certain period of time. READ MORE

  5. 5. Improving medical abortion : using mifepristone in combination with a prostaglandin analogue

    Author : Christian Fiala; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Medical abortion; mifepristone; misoprostol; slow release; home use; hCG; ultrasound; verification of expulsion; non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug; pain relief; second trimester; uterine contractility; acceptability;

    Abstract : Background: Induced abortion is still a major health problem in the world and the most frequently performed intervention in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with an estimated total of 46 millions worldwide each year. Medical abortion with mifepristone and prostaglandin was first introduced in 1988, and is now approved in 29 countries. READ MORE
