  1. 1. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs in Cyclooxygenases 1 and 2 : Binding modes and mechanisms from computational methods and free energy calculations

    Author : Yasmin Shamsudin Khan; Johan Åqvist; Hugo Gutiérrez de Terán; Xavier Barril; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; molecular dynamics simulations; binding free energy; molecular docking; cyclooxygenase; non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; free energy perturbation; potentials of mean force;

    Abstract : Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most commonly used classes of drugs. They target the cyclooxygenases (COX) 1 and 2 to reduce the physiological responses of pain, fever, and inflammation. Due to their role in inducing angiogenesis, COX proteins have also been identified as targets in cancer therapies. READ MORE

  2. 2. Treatment of Temporomandibular Disorders of Arthrogeneous Origin. Controlled double-blind studies of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and a stabilisation appliance

    Author : EwaCarin Ekberg; Institutionen för hälsovetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Temporomandibular Joint Disorders; Randomized Controlled Trials; Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Agents; Occlusal Splints; Treatment Outcome; Mandibular Condyle Radiography; Subtraction Technique; Radiographic Image Enhancement; Causality; Odontology; stomatology; Odontologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to prospectively evaluate the short-term effect of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (diclofenac sodium, Voltaren) and stabilisation appliance in controlled trials of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) of arthrogeneous origin. The active treatments were compared to placebo in the study of diclofenac and to a control appliance in the other study. READ MORE

  3. 3. Heterotopic Ossification : Clinical and Experimental Studies on Risk Factors, Etiology and Inhibition by Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs

    Author : Per-Erik Persson; Olle Nilsson; Per Aspenberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; Heterotopic ossification; Hip prosthesis; NSAIDs; Prophylaxis; Prosthesis loosening; Reoperation; Animal model; Bone formation; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, occurrence of heterotopic ossification (HO) following total hip arthroplasty (THA) was studied. Preventive effects and complications with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were analyzed. Experimental investigations on bone formation were employed to gain insight to the mechanism of NSAIDs action on bone.(I). READ MORE

  4. 4. Faecal Calprotectin Diagnostics : Focus on Primary Care and Suspected Sources of Error

    Author : Zlatica Rendek; Henrik Hjortswang; Magnus Falk; Ewa Grodzinsky; Stergios Kechagias; Mikael Lilja; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Calprotectin; Inflammatory bowel disease; Gastrointestinal disease; Primary health care; Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents; Proton pump inhibitors; Respiratory tract infection;

    Abstract : Patients with gastrointestinal symptoms often present a diagnostic challenge for general practitioners. Faecal calprotectin (FC) is commonly used as a marker of intestinal inflammation and is useful for differentiating between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), as well as for the follow-up of patients with IBD and monitoring treatment response. 5. 5. A Drosophila Disease-Model for Transthyretin-associated Amyloidosis

    Author : Malgorzata Pokrzywa; Erik Lundgren; Damian Crowther; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; transthyretin; amyloid; amyloidosis; Drosophila; transthyretin-associated amyloidosis; Familial amyloid polyneuropathy; neurodegeneration; serum amyloid P component; Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs; drug screens; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Amyloidoses comprise a group of gain-of-toxic function protein misfolding diseases, in which normally soluble proteins in their functional state undergo conformational changes into highly organized and generally intractable thread-like aggregates, termed amyloid fibrils. These structures accumulate predominantly in the extracellular space but growing evidence suggests that amyloids may start to form intracellularly. READ MORE
