  1. 1. Expression and Regulation of Neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the Islets of Langerhans

    Author : Ulrika Myrsén Axcrona; Neuroendokrin cellbiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Endocrinology; regulatory peptides; diabetes; glucocorticoids; beta cell; islet hormones; neuropeptide Y; insulin; secreting systems; diabetology; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the expression, localization and regulation of neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans under normal and experimental conditions. NPY is widely distributed in the mammalian nervous system and belongs to a family of closely related petides also comprising peptide YY (PYY) and pancreatic polypeptide (PP). READ MORE

  2. 2. On the role of nitric oxide in uterine secretion

    Author : Birgitta Mörlin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Autonomic nerves; endometrial and cervical secretion; nitric oxide; guineapig.;

    Abstract : Background: Uterine secretion is important in many different aspects of reproduction e.g. sperm transport and survival, fertilization, nourishment of the ovum and implantation. A cholinergic autonomic nervous secretory innervation has been established and modulation of the secretion by prostaglandins and NSAID drugs has been postulated. READ MORE

  3. 3. Regulation of experimentally induced airway obstruction

    Author : Eva G. Lindström; Jan Lötvall; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : airway obstruction; antigen; capsaicin; epithelium; inflammatory mediators; sensory neurons; tube preparation; tachykinins; formoterol; histamine; presynaptic inhibition; in vitro; guinea pig; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Asthma is one of the commonest diseases in industrialized countries. The cause and mechanisms of !he disorder are still not fully unden;tood, al!hough it is known that inflammation in !he airways plays an important role. Inflammatory mediators, e.g. READ MORE

  4. 4. Neuropeptide Y Y1 receptor mechanisms in sympathetic vascular control

    Author : Rickard E Malmström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Sympathetic vasoconstriction; neuropeptide Y1 Y; receptor antagonists; BIBP 3226; SR 120107A; ischaemia; pig.;

    Abstract : It was demonstrated that the Y1 receptor was the predominant vascular neuropeptide Y (NPY) receptor in pig kidney and hind limb as exogenous and endogenous NPY evoked vasoconstrictor responses that were almost or totally abolished by the selective non-peptide Y1 receptor antagonist, BIBP 3226. Furthermore, renal vasoconstriction was evoked by NPY and a peptide Y1 agonist, but not by a Y 2 agonist, and these responses were strongly reduced by another non-peptide Y, receptor antagonist, SR 120107A.
