  1. 21. Internal Erosion Phenomena in Embankment Dams : Throughflow and internal erosion mechanisms

    Author : Farzad Ferdos; Anders Wörman; Bijan Dargahi; Fredrik Johansson; Willi Hager; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Internal erosion modelling in porous material; Constitutive law of erosion for closure of continuum-mechanics-based balance equations for numerical modelling; High Reynolds-number turbulent flow; Flow laws; Coarse rockfill material throughflow; Computational Fluid Dynamics.; Civil and Architectural Engineering; Byggvetenskap;

    Abstract :  In this study, two major internal erosion initiation processes, suffusion and concentrated leak mechanisms, which lead to both defect formation in a dam’s body and its foundation and high throughflow in dams subjected to internal erosion were studied. This understanding has the potential to facilitate numerical modelling and expedite dam safety assessment studies. READ MORE

  3. 23. Comparisons between classical and quantum mechanical nonlinear lattice models

    Author : Peter Jason; Magnus Johansson; Jonas Larson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Discrete Breathers; Bose-Einstein-Condensation; Instabilities; Oscillatory Instabilities; Classical-Quantum correspondence; Bose-Hubbard model; DNLS; discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation; nonlinear; nonlinear lattice models; compacton;

    Abstract : In the mid-1920s, the great Albert Einstein proposed that at extremely low temperatures, a gas of bosonic particles will enter a new phase where a large fraction of them occupy the same quantum state. This state would bring many of the peculiar features of quantum mechanics, previously reserved for small samples consisting only of a few atoms or molecules, up to a macroscopic scale. READ MORE

  4. 24. Fully Nonlinear Unsteady Three-Dimensional Boundary Element Method for Force Predictions on a Restrained Hull in Waves

    Author : Martin Kjellberg; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []

    Abstract : There is a need from both academia and industry for more accurate and efficient methods for predicting the behavior of ships in a seaway. A large variety of methods with varying level of sophistication and accuracy already exists today. READ MORE

  5. 25. Aspects of Wave Interaction in Nonlinear Media

    Author : Björn Hall; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Selected aspects of various types of nonlinear wave interaction are investigated. These aspects are studied in terms of Nonlinear Schrödinger equations, mainly analytically and numerically, but also experimentally. READ MORE
