  1. 1. Perinatal brain injury - markers and mediators. Non-protein-bound iron and pro-inflammatory cytokines in newborn infants and neonatal pigs

    Author : Karin Sävman; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Asphyxia; hypoxia; posthemorrhagic ventricular dilatation; preterm; newborn; perinatal; brain; cerebrospinal fluid; cytokines; IL-1ß; IL-6; IL-8; TNF-a; non-protein-bound-iron;

    Abstract : Two groups of newborn infants have an increased risk for perinatal brain injury; preterm infants and term infants subjected to birth asphyxia. Experimental studies indicate that hypoxic-ischemic insults in the perinatal period initiate a secondary neurotoxic cascade including formation of toxic reactive oxygen species as well as an inflammatory response with elevated levels of potentially neurotoxic cytokines. 2. 2. Delayed cord clamping in Nepal-Evidence for implementation

    Author : Nisha Rana; Mats Målqvist; Ola Andersson; Ashish KC; Thorkild Tylleskär; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Attitude; Clinical Practice; Ferritin; Haemoglobin; Iron deficiency; Iron deficiency anaemia; Iron status; Jaundice; Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia; Newborn; Neurodevelopment; Randomized controlled trial; Umbilical cord clamping.; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : The aims of this thesis were to investigate effects of timing of umbilical cord clamping on newborn health, and on infant outcomes up to 12 months of age in a high-risk population and to explore the context of implementing changed umbilical cord clamping practices in Nepal.A randomised controlled trial with 540 late preterm and term infants born by normal vaginal delivery was set up at a maternity hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal. 3. 3. Initiation of ventilation, surfactant treatment, and lung function after preterm birth

    Author : Lars Björklund; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Respiration; Artificial; Pediatrics; Pediatri; Respiratory Function Tests; Pulmonary Surfactants; Newborn; Respiratory Distress Syndrome; Infant; Premature; Animals;

    Abstract : The thesis investigates lung function and the effects of rescue surfactant treatment in mechanically ventilated preterm human infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), and the effects of ventilation at birth on the response to surfactant supplementation in preterm lambs. To assess lung function, the author recorded static pressure-volume (P-V) curves during passive deflation from total lung capacity (TLC) to ambient pressure and measured end-expiratory lung volume (FRC) during mechanical ventilation by tracer gas washout. 4. 4. Perinatal Energy Substrate Metabolism : Glucose Production and Lipolysis in Pregnant Women and Newborn Infants with Particular Reference to Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR)

    Author : Barbro Diderholm; Jan Gustafsson; Uwe Ewald; Olle Söder; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pediatrics; Lipolysis; Glucose; Newborn infant; Pregnant women; IUGR; Insulin; Stable isotopes; Pediatrik; Paediatric medicine; Pediatrisk medicin;

    Abstract : Glucose is the most important fetal nutrient and the production of this substrate increases in the pregnant woman. In the last trimester the increased insulin resistance directs energy substrates to the fetus. Fetal growth is sometimes disturbed, often without an obvious explanation. READ MORE

  5. 5. Hyaluronan and the receptor CD 44 in the heart and vessels : a study in normal and pathological conditions

    Author : Martin Hellström; Anna Engström-Laurent; Bengt Johansson; Lena Jonasson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : hyaluronan; CD44; heart; Rat; cardiac hypertrophy; artery; vein; human; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : Tissues are not solely composed of cells. The extracellular matrix is important for the cell well-being and cell-cell communication. The glycosaminoglycan hyaluronan (HYA) is a widely distributed extracellular matrix (ECM) component. READ MORE
