  1. 1. Muscle function and physical activity in pre-pubertal school children

    Author : Susanna Stenevi Lundgren; Ortopedi - klinisk och molekylär osteoporosforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; children; physical activity; exercise; isokinetic muscle strength; vertical jump height; normative; intervention; school transport; DXA; anthropometry; fat mass; lean mass; weight; height; body mass index; girls; boys; pre-pubertal;

    Abstract : Background: Regular participation in physical activity or organized exercise is regarded as one important lifestyle factor that could improve musculoskeletal health, fitness and body composition. For children and adolescents physical activity is important not only in training of the neuromuscular system, coordination and balance, but in a wider perspective, for adopting a lifestyle that possibly reduces the risk of coronary artery disease, obesity, osteoporosis and other contributors to morbidity and mortality in the population. 2. 2. Bone Mineral Density Determination in Children. Evaluation of a novel method and application to Duchenne muscular dystrophy

    Author : Ann-Charlott Söderpalm; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : adolescents; age- and gender-matched; Becker; bone densitometry; bone markers; bone mineral density; calciotropic hormones; children; DXA; DXL; Duchenne; glucocorticoids; muscular dystrophy; normative; reference values; skeleton;

    Abstract : Aims: The overall aims of this thesis were to evaluate the dual-energy X-ray and laser (DXL) method for bone densitometry measurements of the calcaneus in children, to provide reference data for bone mineral density (BMD) in the heel bone in young children and to apply the DXL technique to patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and conduct a survey about bone health of DMD patients. Study populations and methods: The DXL Calscan method was modified and adapted for measurements in children and applied to bone densitometry in all subsequent studies. READ MORE

  4. 4. Young adults with childhood-onset inflammatory bowel disease - aspects of bone mineral density, body composition and physical exercise

    Author : Gudmundur Vignir Sigurdsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; IBD; BMD; Body composition; Physical exercise; HR-pQCT;

    Abstract : Background: Our research group has previously shown that low bone mineral density (BMD) is common in children and adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, there is limited knowledge on the development of BMD and body composition traits (skeletal muscle and body fat) in early adulthood in this patient group. READ MORE

  5. 5. Training and hormones in physically active women : with and without oral contraceptive use

    Author : Lisbeth Wikström-Frisén; Karin Larsén; Anna Nordtröm; Cecilia Fridén; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; female athletes; hormones; menstrual cycle; oral contraceptive cycle; resistance training; muscle strength; power; body composition; female athlete triad; overreaching; overtraining syndrome;

    Abstract : Background: The number of women participating in sports has increased dramatically, though research in sports are often performed on men. Physical exercise is known to increase physical performance and improve well-being. READ MORE
