  1. 1. Macrophage Activation and AP-1 in Atherosclerosis

    Author : Maria Stollenwerk; Kardiovaskulär forskning - immunitet och ateroskleros; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kardiovaskulära systemet; Proteins; enzymology; Proteiner; enzymologi; Cardiovascular system; carotid plaque; interleukin-1b; caspase-1.; very low-density lipoprotein; fatty acids; activator protein-1; inflammation; Atherosclerosis; nuclear factor-kB; macrophages; tumor necrosis factor;

    Abstract : High levels of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and intermediate density lipoprotein (IDL) have been identified as independent risk factors for coronary heart disease. Hypertriglyceridemia is generally associated with an increased expression of inflammatory makers and inflammation is thought to contribute to atherosclerosis and its complications. READ MORE

  2. 2. Inflammatory response and intervention in experimental acute pancreatitis

    Author : Changbin Shi; Lund Kirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi; traumatology; Surgery; orthopaedics; signalling pathways; protein kinase C; nuclear factor-kB; leukocytes; inflammatory mediators; immunosuppression; acute pancreatitis; extracellular signal-regulated kinase;

    Abstract : Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common disease where underlying mechanisms for the local initiating events in the pancreas, the systemic dissemination of the inflammatory response and remote organ dysfunction still are unclear. The overall aim of the thesis was to study mechanisms of the inflammatory response in AP with special emphasis on local, systemic, and distant organ injury directed at different signalling pathways, and potential therapeutic strategies to prevent the development of inflammation and cell injury following AP. 3. 3. Effects of lipid oxidation on transcriptional regulation and cell death

    Author : Mikko Ares; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : atherosclerosis; low density lipoprotein; lipid oxidation; nuclear factor-KB; activator protein-1; Iysophosphatidylcholine; tumor necrosis factor-alpha; oxysterol; Ca2 ; apoptosis; lipid accumulation;

    Abstract : Elevated levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL) in plasma are associated with an increased risk for atherosclerosis. Excessive accumulation of lipoproteins and lipids in the vascular wall is thought to lead to the development of advanced atherosclerotic lesions prone to rupture. READ MORE

  4. 4. Inhibition of smooth muscle cell proliferation after balloon injury

    Author : Bojan Cercek; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Smooth muscle cell proliferation is an important part of the arterial response to injury Insulin like growth factor-I (IGF-I) is involved in regulation of cell proliferation and hypopituitarism is associated with decreased vessel wall response to injury. We investigated the role of vascular IGF-I in vessel wall response to injury. READ MORE

  5. 5. Molecular studies of the humoral immune response in Hyalophora cecropia : structure, function and transcriptional regulation of three classes of immunoresponsive genes

    Author : Shao-Cong Sun; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Insects have an efficient humoral immune system, an important part of which is constituted by the antibacterial proteins, produced upon bacterial infection or wounding. In this thesis, the molecular mechanism of this immune response was investigated in the giant silkmoth Hyalophora cecropia, where a set of bacteriainducible proteins (immune proteins) had previously been characterized.
