  1. 1. The Nuclear Waters of the Soviet Union : Hydro-Engineering and Technocratic Culture in the Nuclear Industry

    Author : Achim Klüppelberg; Per Högselius; Kati Lindström; Anna Storm; Melanie Arndt; KTH; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Nuclear power; water; technocratic culture; USSR; energy system; hydro-nuclear entanglements; Atomkraft; Wasser; technokratische Kultur; Sowjetunion; Energiesystem; hydronukleare Verflechtungen; Kärnkraft; vatten; teknokratisk kultur; Sovjetunionen; energisystem; hydronukleära sammanflätningar; History of Science; Technology and Environment; Historiska studier av teknik; vetenskap och miljö;

    Abstract : After the development of nuclear weapons, civil applications were seen as a way through which protagonists of Soviet modernity could embrace a new future, which Josephson called atomic-powered communism. Where hydro-powered communism had reached its boundaries, nuclear energy was to take over. READ MORE

  2. 2. Safety Reviews of Technical System Modifications in the Nuclear Industry

    Author : Thomas Falk; Sven-Ove Hansson; Teemu Reiman; KTH; []
    Keywords : safety; safety review; nuclear; nuclear power plant; process; process improvement; action research; experience feedback;

    Abstract : The function of safety reviews (here understood as expert judgements on proposals for design modifications and redesign of technical systems in commercial Nuclear Power Plants, supported by formalised safety review processes) plays a fundamental role for safety in nuclear installations. The primary aims of the presented case studies includes: critically examining and identifying the main areas for improvement of the existing technical safety review process as it is conducted at a Swedish nuclear power plant, developing a new process, and evaluating whether any improvements were accomplished. 3. 3. 14C Produced by Nuclear Power Reactors - Generation and Characterization of Gaseous, Liquid and Solid Waste

    Author : Åsa Magnusson; Kärnfysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; waste disposal; spent ion-exchange resins; mass balance assessment; Nuclear physics; environmental impact; Fysicumarkivet A:2007:Magnusson; nuclear power plant; Kärnfysik; Carbon-14;

    Abstract : This thesis presents the results from studies on carbon-14 produced by nuclear power reactors. Radioactive 14C enters the carbon cycle and can be taken up by humans, where it will constitute a potential health hazard. READ MORE

  4. 4. Effective Spatial Mapping for Coupled Code Analysis of Thermal–Hydraulics/Neutron–Kinetics of Boiling Water Reactors

    Author : Joanna Peltonen; Weimin Ma; Maria Avramova; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Boiling Water Reactor; RELAP5; TRACE; PARCS; Coupled TH NK analysis; Spatial Mapping; Turbine Trip; Feedwater Transient; Control Rod Drop; Reactor Stability; Hierarchical Clustering; kokvattenreaktor; reaktoranalys; RELAP5; TRACE; PARCS; TH NK analys; turbin tripp; matarvatten transient; fallande styrstav; reaktor stabilitet; hierarkisk klustringsmetodik; SRA - Energy; SRA - Energi;

    Abstract : Analyses of nuclear reactor safety have increasingly required coupling of full three dimensional neutron kinetics (NK) core models with system transient thermal–hydraulics (TH) codes.  In order to produce results within a reasonable computing time, the coupled codes use two different spatial description of the reactor core.
