  1. 1. Safety Reviews of Technical System Modifications in the Nuclear Industry

    Author : Thomas Falk; Sven-Ove Hansson; Teemu Reiman; KTH; []
    Keywords : safety; safety review; nuclear; nuclear power plant; process; process improvement; action research; experience feedback;

    Abstract : The function of safety reviews (here understood as expert judgements on proposals for design modifications and redesign of technical systems in commercial Nuclear Power Plants, supported by formalised safety review processes) plays a fundamental role for safety in nuclear installations. The primary aims of the presented case studies includes: critically examining and identifying the main areas for improvement of the existing technical safety review process as it is conducted at a Swedish nuclear power plant, developing a new process, and evaluating whether any improvements were accomplished. 2. 2. Streams, Steams, and Steels : A Transnational History of Risk Regulation in Nuclear Power Plants (1850–1985)

    Author : Siegfried Evens; Per Högselius; Kati Lindström; Anna Storm; Scott Knowles; KTH; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Nuclear; risk; water; steam; steel; regulation; safety; Nucléaire; risque; eau; vapeur; acier; sûreté; réglementation; Kärnkraft; risk; vatten; ånga; stål; säkerhet; History of Science; Technology and Environment; Historiska studier av teknik; vetenskap och miljö;

    Abstract : Water is essential to produce nuclear energy and prevent nuclear disasters. As light water reactors are increasingly seen as a solution to achieving a sustainable energy transition and battling the climate crisis, it is more important than ever to investigate the risks of using water for nuclear power production. 3. 3. Internal Dosimetry in Nuclear Fuel Fabrication : Occupational Exposure to Uranium Aerosols

    Author : Edvin Hansson; Mats Eriksson; Håkan Pettersson; Per Roos; Michael Sandborg; Bastian Breustedt; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Uranium; Aerosol; Internal; Dose; Nuclear;

    Abstract : The production of nuclear fuel can be associated with occupational exposure to ionizing radiation from radioactive decay of uranium. Such exposure must be sufficiently low and radiation doses adequately determined. Radiation doses from internal exposure, i.e. READ MORE

  4. 4. Studies of safety and critical work situations in nuclear power plants : a human factors perspective

    Author : Lena Kecklund; Erik Hollnagel; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Safety; nuclear power; operators; work-related factors; performance; human error; annual outage; MTO; Psychology; Psykologi; psykologi; Psychology;

    Abstract : The purpose of this thesis was to develop and apply different approaches for analyzing safety in critical work situations in real work settings in nuclear power plants, and also to identify safety enhancing measures by using the framework of interaction between human, organizational and technical subsystems (MTO, man-technology-organization). A Cognitive Psychology as well as a Stress Psychology framework was used. READ MORE

  5. 5. Accelerator-driven systems : safety and kinetics

    Author : Marcus Eriksson; Janne Wallenius; Hamid Aït Abderrrahim; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nuclear physics; Kärnfysik; Nuclear physics; Kärnfysik;

    Abstract : The accelerator-driven system (ADS) is recognized as a promising system for the purpose of nuclear waste transmutation and minimization of spent fuel radiotoxicity. The primary cause for this derives from its accelerator-driven, sub-critical operating state, which introduces beneficial safety-related features allowing for application of cores employing fuel systems containing pure transuranics or minor actinides, thereby offering increased incineration rate of waste products and minimal deployment of advanced (and expensive) partitioning and transmutation technologies.
