  1. 1. The effect of mechanical ventilation on the abdominal organs

    Author : Silvia Marchesi; Miklós Lipcsey; Anders Larsson; Göran Hedenstierna; Eddie Weitzberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mechanical ventilation; abdominal organs; diffusion weighted imaging; magnetic resonance; perfusion; edema; inflammation; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care;

    Abstract : During mechanical ventilation (MV), the interplay between abdomen and thorax has been studied unilaterally focusing on the effect that an increased abdominal pressure would have on the thorax. Only a small cluster of studies offered a different perspective showing a lower inflammation and a better lymphatic clearance of edema in abdominal organs when spontaneous breathing was applied compared to MV. Abstract : Lung diseases continue to present a large burden to public health, especially in industrialized countries. For abetter understanding of the underlying patho-mechanisms in lung related diseases as well as for testing theefficacy of novel therapies, preclinical studies in animal models are indispensable. 3. 3. Quantification of pulmonary scintigraphy

    Author : Jiahua Xu; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Emphysema; Inhomogeneity; Perfusion; scintigraphy; SPECT; 99mTc-Technegas; Ventilation; V Q;

    Abstract : Modern nuclear medicine techniques, such as SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography), enable quantification and localisation of lung function in small lung elements, but appropriate methods are not yet available. The aim of the present project was therefore to develop and evaluate methods for mapping lung function in planar scintigrams and in SPECT. READ MORE

  4. 4. Phase-Contrast X-Ray Imaging of Complex Objects

    Author : Ilian Häggmark; Hans Hertz; Anna Burvall; Henning Friis Poulsen; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Fysik; Physics; Biological and Biomedical Physics; Biologisk och biomedicinsk fysik;

    Abstract : X-ray imaging is a group of techniques using electromagnetic radiation of high energy. The ability to quickly visualize internal structures in thick opaque objects has made it an indispensable tool in research, medicine, and industry. READ MORE

  5. 5. Effect of Ventilatory Support on Abdominal Fluid Balance in a Sepsis Model

    Author : Marco Lattuada; Göran Hedenstierna; Filip Fredén; Anders Oldner; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : In patients affected by acute respiratory failure or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) the leading cause of death is failure of different vital organs other than the lungs, so called multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). The abdominal organs have a crucial role in the pathogenesis of this syndrome. READ MORE
