  1. 1. Nucleotide Substitution Patterns in Vertebrate Genomes

    Author : Carina Farah Mugal; Hans Ellegren; Ziheng Yang; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nucleotide substitutions; mutation rate variation; strand asymmetries; CpG effect; GC-biased gene conversion; codon evolution; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Abstract : The rates and patterns at which nucleotide substitutions occur vary significantly across the genome sequence of vertebrates. A prominent example is the difference in the rate of evolution of functional sequences versus nonfunctional (neutrally evolving) sequences, which is explained by the influence of natural selection on functional sequences. 2. 2. Computational Approaches to the Identification and Characterization of Non-Coding RNA Genes

    Author : Pontus Larsson; Anders Virtanen; Leif Kirsebom; Stephen Mount; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ncRNA; snRNA; U1; splice site; alternative splicing; Dictyostelium; nucleotide composition; partial sums; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik;

    Abstract : Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have emerged as highly diverse and powerful key players in the cell, the range of capabilities spanning from catalyzing essential processes in all living organisms, e.g. protein synthesis, to being highly specific regulators of gene expression. READ MORE

  3. 3. Comparative Genomics of Endosymbiotic Bacteria

    Author : Ivica Tamas; Paul Baumann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; comparative genomics; endosymbiotic bacteria; Buchnera; reductive evolution; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Genomes of intracellular bacteria are thought to be the products of reductive evolution. They have evolved from ancestral genomes of free-living bacteria through a process of massive gene loss. READ MORE

  4. 4. Birds as a Model for Comparative Genomic Studies

    Author : Axel Künstner; Hans Ellegren; Hanna Johannesson; Chris Ponting; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Birds; Selection; Gene expression; Sequence evolution; Next-generation sequencing; Comparative genomics; Molecular evolution; Genomics; Substitution Rates; Non-coding DNA; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Abstract : Comparative genomics provides a tool to investigate large biological datasets, i.e. genomic datasets. In my thesis I focused on inferring patterns of selection in coding and non-coding regions of avian genomes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Structural and biochemical basis for the high fidelity and processivity of DNA polymerase ε

    Author : Rais Ahmad Ganai; Erik Johansson; Per Elias; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; DNA polymerase ε; Crystal structure; P domain; Pre-steady state kinetics; β-hairpin loop; Primer switching; Strand displacement; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : DNA polymerase epsilon (Pol ε) is a multi-subunit B-family DNA polymerase that is involved in leading strand DNA replication in eukaryotes. DNA Pol ε in yeast consists of four subunits, Pol2, Dpb2, Dpb3, and Dpb4. Pol2 is the catalytic subunit and Dpb2, Dpb3, and Dpb4 are the accessory subunits. READ MORE
