  1. 1. Silicon cycling in the Baltic Sea : Trends and budget of dissolved silica

    Author : Liana Papush; Åsa Danielsson; Lars Rahm; Petra Tallberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Dissolved silica; trends; nutrient; nutrient ratios; diatoms; Redfield; limitation; eutrophication; riverine load; budget; fluxes; accumulation; retention; optimisation; Baltic Sea; Löst kisel; trender; näringsämne; näringsämnens kvoter; kiselalger; Redfield; tillväxtbegränsning; övergödning; flodtillförsel; budget; flöden; ackumulering; retention; optimering; Östersjön; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : The dissolved silicon (DSi) has a crucial role for growth of a large group of primary producers – diatoms and, hence, impact on functioning of the aquatic food web. This thesis contributes to an increased understanding of the modifications of the DSi cycling in the Baltic Sea. READ MORE

  2. 2. Nutrient dynamics in the North Pacific subtropical gyre : phosphorus fluxes in the upper oligotrophic ocean

    Author : Karin Björkman; Tom Berman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : In the contemporary North Pacific subtropical gyre (NPSG) the extant microbial community is based on prokaryotic cells with the cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus dominating the phototrophic component. The prevalence of dinitrogen (N2) fixing organisms, such as Trichodesmium spp. READ MORE

  3. 3. Control of nutrient fluxes in large river basins

    Author : Andrzej Tonderski; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AREAS; TVÄRVETENSKAPLIGA FORSKNINGSOMRÅDEN;

    Abstract : Nitrogen and phosphorus transported with rivers from land to sea have been reported to be the major sources contributing to the eutrophication of the Baltic Sea. In this thesis, I describe how the sources and waterborne fluxes of nutrients in large river basins can be systematically assessed. READ MORE

  4. 4. Benthic fluxes of biogenic elements in the Baltic Sea : Influence of oxygen and macrofauna

    Author : Nils Ekeroth; Sven Blomqvist; Per OJ Hall; Bjørn Sundby; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sediment biogeochemistry; Bioturbation; Benthic nutrient fluxes; Bottom water oxygenation; Box corer; Sediment sampling; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates how benthic fluxes of phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), and silicon (Si) change upon oxygenation of anoxic soft bottoms in the brackish, eutrophicated Baltic Sea. Direct measurements in situ by benthic landers demonstrated that fluxes of dissolved inorganic P (DIP) from anoxic bottom sediments in the Eastern Gotland Basin are higher than previously thought (Paper I). 5. 5. Greenhouse gas fluxes between drained forested peatlands and the atmosphere - influence of nutrient status and wood ash fertilization

    Author : Maria Ernfors; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; greenhouse gases; peatlands wood; ash; nutrient status;

    Abstract : The management of peatlands for wood production involves drainage and, sometimes, fertilization with, for example, wood ash. The effects of these measures on greenhouse gas fluxes, in relation to the ... READ MORE
