  1. 11. Phenotypic evolution and adaptive strategies in marine phytoplankton (Coccolithophores)

    Author : Luka Šupraha; Jorijntje Henderiks; Bente Edvardsen; Jeremy Young; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Coccolithophores; Life-Cycle; Phytoplankton; Nutrient limitation; Temperature; Microscopy; High-throughput sequencing; Taxonomy;

    Abstract : Coccolithophores are biogeochemically important marine algae that interact with the carbon cycle through photosynthesis (CO2 sink), calcification (CO2 source) and burial of carbon into oceanic sediments. The group is considered susceptible to the ongoing climate perturbations, in particular to ocean acidification, temperature increase and nutrient limitation. READ MORE

  2. 12. Ecological implications of the production of toxic substances by fish killing phytoplankton species grown under variable N:P-ratios

    Author : Niclas Johansson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mixotrophy; grazing; allelopathic interactions; allelopathy; algae; phytoplankton; nutrient limitation; toxicity; Toxic haptophytes; fishkilling phytoplankton; Hydrobiology; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi;

    Abstract : The influence of different nutrient conditions on the production of toxins was studied in certain fishkilling haptophytes (e.g. Prymnesium parvum and Chrysochromulina polylepis). READ MORE

  3. 13. Regulation and mechanism of mating-type switching in Kluyveromyces lactis

    Author : Naghmeh Rajaei; Stefan Åström; Kenneth Wolfe; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; yeast; mating-type switching; DSB; gene conversion; transposable elements; RAS cAMP pathway; nutrient limitation; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : Transposable elements (TEs) have had immense impact on the structure, function and evolution of eukaryotic genomes. The work in this thesis identified Kat1, a novel domesticated DNA transposase of the hAT family in the yeast Kluyveromyces lactis. Kat1 triggers a genome rearrangement that results in a switch of mating type from MATa to MATα. READ MORE

  4. 14. Organic acids in root exudates and soil solutions. Importance to calcicole and calcifuge behaviour of plants

    Author : Lena Ström; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nutrient-solubilisation; iron; phosphate; nutrient-limitations; citrate; oxalate; organic acids; root exudation; acidifuge; Calcicole; calcifuge; adaptations.; Plant ecology; Växtekologi;

    Abstract : Many vascular plant species are unable to colonise calcareous sites, the floristic composition of adjacent limestone and acid silicate soils differing markedly. The inability of these 'calcifuge' species to establish themselves and grow on limestone soil appears to mainly be related to their low capacity for solubilising and absorbing phosphate and/or iron from such soils. 5. 15. Soil phosphorus – a multidimensional resource that plays an important role for grassland plant species richness

    Author : Jakob Sandberg; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; niche dimension; nutrient limitation; niche differentiation; competition; soil nitrogen; soil phosphorus; plant diversity; species richness; Grassland; land use; landscape scale;

    Abstract : The semi-natural grassland habitats contain an important part of the plant diversity in Europe. Changes in farming practices have lead to drastic decreases in plant species richness. The aim of the present thesis is to contribute to the knowledge about mechanisms governing the plant species richness in grasslands with emphasis on soil nutrients. READ MORE
