  1. 6. Mechanisms structuring the pelagic microbial food web : Importance of resource and predation

    Author : Kristina Samuelsson; Agneta Andersson; Christiane Lancelot; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; pelagic microbial food web; bacteria; flagellates; ciliates; phytoplankton; mixotrophy; nutrient status; predation limitation; resource limitation; Baltic Sea; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Temporal and spatial variations of pelagic microorganisms in the northern Baltic Sea were studied, as well as factors influencing their abundance and growth rates. Three main questions were asked 1) How does increased productivity influence the structure of the microbial food web? 2) Does predation limitation vary between trophic levels? 3) What is the relative importance of resource and predation limitation at different trophic levels?A field study in the northern Baltic Sea showed that dominating protozoa, flagellates and ciliates, increased with increasing primary productivity from north to south. 2. 7. Recruitment ecology and fungal interactions in mycoheterotrophic Ericaceae

    Author : Veronika A. Johansson; Ove Eriksson; Andrew Taylor; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 454 Pyrosequencing; Dispersal limitation; Dust seeds; Ectomycorrhiza; Ericaceae; Microsite limitation; Monotropa hypopitys; Mycoheterotroph; Pyroleae; Seed limitation; Stable isotopes; Subterranean seedling; Symbiotic germination; Tricholoma; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : There are generally two contrasting alternatives to what limits recruitment in plants, namely the availability of seeds (seed limitation) or the quality or quantity of suitable sites (microsite limitation). Dust seeds, the smallest existing seeds, lack or have minimal nutrient reserves. READ MORE

  3. 8. Nutrient limitation and elemental ratios in Baltic Sea plankton

    Author : Jakob Walve; Karin Lochte; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plankton; Östersjön; Ekosystem i vatten; Systems Ecology; systemekologi;

    Abstract : Phytoplankton growth is frequently limited by the supply of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), or sometimes other elements. N2-fixing cyanobacteria are favoured by N limitation, which they may alleviate by adding new N to the ecosystem. READ MORE

  4. 9. Biomass and Nutrient Status of Benthic Algae in Lakes

    Author : Maria Kahlert; Alan Steinman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; benthic algae; patchiness; C:N:P ratio; nutrient recycling; grazer; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; limnologi; Limnology;

    Abstract : For a complete picture of the lake ecosystem, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms regulating biomass and nutrient status (nutrient limitation, optimal supply, or surplus) of benthic algae, which are important primary producers and a food resource for grazers. This thesis gives an overview of the natural variation of benthic algae at different scales of space and time and on different substrates, and unravels some of the underlying factors. READ MORE

  5. 10. The role of nutrients for stream ecosystem function in Arctic landscapes : drivers of productivity under environmental change

    Author : Maria Myrstener; Ryan A. Sponseller; Reiner Giesler; Ann-Kristin Bergström; Tenna Riis; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nutrients; Stream; Arctic; Boreal; Primary productivity; Algae; Biofilm; Nutrient limitation; Nitrogen; Phosphorus;

    Abstract : Arctic and sub-Arctic freshwaters are currently experiencing substantial ecosystem changes due to the effects of global warming. Global warming effects on these freshwaters include increasing water temperatures, altered hydrological patterns, shifts in riparian vegetation and changes in the export of nutrients and carbon from soils.
