16. Strategic nitrogen management in stockless organic cropping systems : redistribution of residual biomass for improved energy and nitrogen balance
Abstract : Agriculture faces the challenge of producing high yields to feed a growing world population, while simultaneously addressing environmental problems such as eutrophication, emissions of greenhouse gases, loss of biodiversity and soil degradation. Organic farming can be part of the solution, as it promotes biodiversity, uses less energy for fertiliser production and often has higher inputs of organic matter to soil than conventional farming. 17. Phytoplankton drivers in a marine system influenced by allochthonous organic matter – the Baltic Sea
Abstract : Climate change scenarios predict that seawater temperature and precipitation will increase in the Baltic Sea region during the next century. In the northern part of the Baltic Sea, increasing inflows of the terrestrial allochthonous dissolved organic matter (ADOM) are expected to be a major consequence of elevated rainfall, which can alter light and nutrient availability for phytoplankton. 18. Removal of wastewater nitrogen in a wetland filter
Abstract : An artificial wetland system, designed to achieve year-round wastewater treatment concomitantly with nutrient recycling, was studied for three years. As part of a joint research project, this thesis focuses on nitrogen transformations and nitrogen removal capacity. READ MORE

19. Food or fuel? : trade-offs between food and biofuels globally and in small-scale organic agriculture
Abstract : There are great expectations on agriculture to provide both food and fuels in the future. Previous attempts to estimate the global bioenergy potential have produced varying results, indicating major uncertainty. This thesis investigated the global theoretical 'potential', or limit, for biofuels based on current agricultural systems. READ MORE

20. Urine separating wastewater systems : experiences of design and nitrogen conservation
Abstract : Urine separating (US) wastewater systems, where urine is collected and used as a fertiliser, may be a strategy to achieve a high degree of nutrient recycling from human waste to agriculture. The Swedish experiences of US systems show that the design of the toilets and the sewers are of great importance to achieve a working system. READ MORE
