  2. 2. Biomass and Nutrient Status of Benthic Algae in Lakes

    Author : Maria Kahlert; Alan Steinman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; benthic algae; patchiness; C:N:P ratio; nutrient recycling; grazer; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; limnologi; Limnology;

    Abstract : For a complete picture of the lake ecosystem, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms regulating biomass and nutrient status (nutrient limitation, optimal supply, or surplus) of benthic algae, which are important primary producers and a food resource for grazers. This thesis gives an overview of the natural variation of benthic algae at different scales of space and time and on different substrates, and unravels some of the underlying factors. READ MORE

  3. 3. Greenhouse gas fluxes between drained forested peatlands and the atmosphere - influence of nutrient status and wood ash fertilization

    Author : Maria Ernfors; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; greenhouse gases; peatlands wood; ash; nutrient status;

    Abstract : The management of peatlands for wood production involves drainage and, sometimes, fertilization with, for example, wood ash. The effects of these measures on greenhouse gas fluxes, in relation to the ... READ MORE

  4. 4. On Carbohydrate Intake and Dental Status in the Elderly

    Author : Torgny Alstad; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Carbohydrates; Cohort analysis; Dental caries; Dental status; Elderly; Epidemiology; Factor analysis; Graphic interaction model; Oral sugar clearance;

    Abstract : People?s dental status has the potential to affect dietary intake and, at the same time, diet may affect the health of the dentition. To study the associations, the elderly appear to be an appropriate group and carbohydrates the appropriate nutrients. READ MORE

  5. 5. Nutrient imbalance in Norway spruce

    Author : Gunnar Thelin; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Silviculture; Växtekologi; Plant ecology; nitrogen saturation; base saturation; pH; multiple limitation; deficiency; copper; boron; potassium; pollution; sustainability; conifers; forestry; forestry technology; Skogsvetenskap; skogsbruk; skogsteknik; Soil Science; agricultural hydrology; Lantbrukshydrologi; marklära;

    Abstract : The studies presented in my thesis indicate that growing Norway spruce in monoculture does not constitute sustainable forest management in a high N and S deposition environment, such as in southern Sweden. The combination of N-induced high growth rates and leaching due to soil acidification causes soil reserves of nutrients to decrease. READ MORE
