1. Organic acids in root exudates and soil solutions. Importance to calcicole and calcifuge behaviour of plants
Abstract : Many vascular plant species are unable to colonise calcareous sites, the floristic composition of adjacent limestone and acid silicate soils differing markedly. The inability of these 'calcifuge' species to establish themselves and grow on limestone soil appears to mainly be related to their low capacity for solubilising and absorbing phosphate and/or iron from such soils. 2. Adapting to succeed : Post-transcriptional gene regulation in Salmonella
Abstract : Salmonella are zoonotic pathogens of worldwide economic and health importance. Both during life outside and inside the host, these pathogens are subject to continuously changing environmental conditions, such as temperature changes, acid stress, nutrient limitations, and others. 3. Ethanol production from lignocellulose using high local cell density yeast cultures. Investigations of flocculating and encapsulated Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Abstract : Efforts are made to change from 1st to 2nd generation bioethanol production, using lignocellulosics as raw materials rather than using raw materials that alternatively can be used as food sources. An issue with lignocellulosics is that a harsh pretreatment step is required in the process of converting them into fermentable sugars. READ MORE

4. Physical control of primary production in a sub-arctic reservoir
Abstract : The first paper (Paper I) in this thesis treats autumn cooling in the Swedish lake Väsman. The water temperature is simulated using a one-dimensional lake model where the vertical mixing is calculated by a k - ɛ turbulence model. The heat exchange between the atmosphere and the lake is formulated in terms of heat fluxes. READ MORE
