    Abstract : Abstract Sweden experienced an epidemic (1984-96) of celiac disease in children, partly attributed to changes in infant feed- ing. Our aim was to compare the total prevalence of celiac disease in two birth cohorts of 12-year-olds and relate the findings to each cohort’s ascertained infant feeding. READ MORE

    Abstract : Down syndrome (DS) is associated with psychomotor retardation, short stature and endocrine dysfunction. Statural growth is a well-known indicator of health. The growth in DS differs markedly from that of other children and there is a 20 cm reduction of final height as compared to target height. READ MORE

  3. 3. Associations between obesity, periodontal inflammation, subgingival microflora and salivary flow rate

    Author : Cecilia Zeigler; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Obesity is a large health problem and is associated with increased risk of diabetes type II, cardiovascular disease as well as implicated in a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders such as Crohn’s disease and subclinical bowel inflammation. 4. 4. Hypothyroidism caused by a mutant thyroid hormone receptor alpha1 : consequences for development and physiology

    Author : Maria Sjögren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Lack of sufficient thyroid hormone during pregnancy and early postnatal development results in profound mental retardation and motor deficits whereas altered thyroid status in the adult is associated with disturbed metabolic homeostasis and impaired cardiac function. Thyroid hormone mediates its effects through the distinct thyroid hormone receptors (TR) TRalpha1 and TRbeta1-2, which are ligand-modulated transcription factors that regulate gene expression both in the presence and absence of hormone. 5. 5. The role of thyroid stimulating hormone receptor and novel candidate genes FAM13a and POM121c in adipocyte dysfunction

    Author : Veroniqa Lundbäck; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : This thesis aimed to investigate the role of thyroid stimulating hormone receptors (TSHRs) in adipose tissue (AT) and their role in AT dysfunction and obesity-related metabolic complications. Furthermore, we aimed to functionally evaluate novel candidate genes associated with insulin resistance, a marker of dysfunctional adipose tissue. READ MORE
