  1. 1. Expression of Neuroendocrine Markers in Normal and Neoplastic Tissue with an Emphasis on Ghrelin and Obestatin

    Author : Malin Grönberg; Eva Tiensuu Janson; Apostolos Tsolakis; Jan Saras; Mauro Papotti; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : ghrelin; obestatin; neuroendocrine marker; immunohistochemistry; neuroendocrine tumors; breast cancer; mammary glands; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Endokrinologi och Diabetologi; Endocrinology and Diabetology;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to characterize the expression of the peptides ghrelin and obestatin, as well as other neuroendocrine markers in human normal tissues, in invasive breast cancer and a wide panel of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). In normal tissues the expression of ghrelin and obestatin was mainly localized to the gastric mucosa, and in lesser extent in the remaining gastrointestinal tract, endocrine pancreas and mammary glands. 2. 2. Characterization of Endocrine Cells and Tumours in the Stomach

    Author : Apostolos V. Tsolakis; Eva T. Janson; Mats Stridsberg; Guida M. Portela-Gomes; Ola Nilsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Oncology; ECL cells; ghrelin cells; gastric endocrine tumours; VMAT-2; ghrelin; obestatin; HDC; U-MeImAA; Onkologi;

    Abstract : Enterochromaffin-like (ECL) and ghrelin cells, in the human gastric mucosa and in gastric endocrine tumours (GETs), were subclassified with respect to immunohistochemical reaction vs. vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT-2), ghrelin/obestatin, and histidine decarboxylase (HDC). 3. 3. Alcohol and the effect on some appetite-regulating hormones in man

    Author : Jan Calissendorff; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; Leptin; ghrelin; octanoylated; PYY3-36; GLP-1; obestatin; alcohol; NPY; IGF-1; IGFBP-1; insulin; glucose; testosterone; cortisol; catecholamines;

    Abstract : Beverage containing alcohol has been used for centuries to stimulate appetite. Ingestion of a moderate amount of alcohol increase energy intake. Regulation of food intake is complex. Several factors cooperate such as neural impulses from sensory organs; sight, smell, gut distension, social setting, memory, current energy status and hormones. READ MORE

  4. 4. Effect of endogenous and exogenous ghrelin on gastrointestinal function in rat and human

    Author : Ylva Falkén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []

    Abstract : Background: Several peptides derived from the gastrointestinal tract (GI) have been shown to have profound effects on GI motility, food intake and metabolism. Two such peptides, derived from the same prohormone, are the peptides ghrelin and obestatin, discovered in 1999 and 2005, respectively. READ MORE

  5. 5. Genes, lifestyle and coronary heart disease risk-epidemiological interaction studies

    Author : Jaana Gustavsson; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Coronary heart disease; gene-lifestyle interaction; APOE; FTO; GHRL; smoking; physical activity; diet; obesity;

    Abstract : Coronary heart disease (CHD) has multifactorial background involving both genetic and lifestyle factors, but much is still unknown about their interactions. The aim of this thesis was to study interactions focusing on apolipoprotein E (APOE), fat mass and obesity-related (FTO) and ghrelin/obestatin prepropeptide (GHRL) genes, as well as smoking, physical activity and diet.
