  1. 1. Bacterioplankton population dynamics in a changing ocean

    Author : Markus V. Lindh; Jarone Pinhassi; Pierre Galand; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; marine microbiology; ecology; bacterioplankton; community composition; diversity; seasonality; biogeography; bimodal; metapopulation; community functioning; climate change; environmental disturbance;

    Abstract : Bacterioplankton is characterized by high diversity, short generation times and rapid turnover. Despite their small size, these numerous microorganisms are a fundamental piece of aquatic ecosystems by channeling carbon to higher trophic levels through dissolved organic matter utilization. 2. 2. Towards Technology Assessment of Ocean Energy in a Developing Country Context

    Author : Linus Hammar; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; electricity; Indian Ocean; technology assessment; ocean energy; Africa; rural electrification; ocean thermal energy conversion; wave power; tidal power;

    Abstract : New technologies for the extraction of valuable ocean resources are emerging: renewable ocean energy. Ocean energy technologies have so far primarily been developed in industrialized countries but will be deployed in both industrialized and developing countries. READ MORE

  3. 3. Baltic Sea from Space : The use of ocean colour data to improve our understanding of ecological drivers across the Baltic Sea basin – algorithm development, validation and ecological applications

    Author : Dmytro Kyryliuk; Susanne Kratzer; Steve W. Lyon; Michelle McCrackin; Koponen Sampsa; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ocean Colour; MERIS; OLCI; water quality; marine ecology; coastal areas; Baltic Sea; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Coastal areas are the most densely populated areas in the world and thus are under immense anthropogenic pressure. To ensure their function and ecological role, coastal areas require continuous monitoring and management. The rapidly emerging field of satellite remote sensing provides a unique opportunity to monitor both land and oceans from Space. READ MORE

  4. 4. Significance of N2 fixing planktonic symbioses for open ocean ecosystems

    Author : Marcus Stenegren; Rachel A. Foster; Agneta Andersson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nitrogen fixation; diazotrophs; symbiosis; DDA; cyanobacteria; qPCR; piecewise SEM; microarray; tropics; subtropics; marine; open ocean; Richelia; Calothrix; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Di-nitrogen (N2) fixers, also called diazotrophs, are able to reduce atmospheric N2 into bioavailable nitrogen, giving them an advantage in open ocean regions with low dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations. The focus of this thesis are three lineages of symbiotic heterocystous filamentous types (het-1, het-2 and het-3), that associate with several genera of microalgae called diatoms (collectively referred to as Diatom Diazotroph Associations, DDAs). 5. 5. Power from the Brave New Ocean - Marine Renewable Energy and Ecological Risks

    Author : Linus Hammar; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Stereo-video; OTEC; Environmental impact; Ocean thermal energy conversion; Fish; Ecological risk assessment; Wave power; Tidal power; Offshore wind power; Ocean energy;

    Abstract : This thesis address ecological risks associated with the possible growth of marine renewable energy. Tidal power, wave power, ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) and currently expanding offshore wind power are likely to become common components of future seascapes. READ MORE
