  2. 2. The Dawn of a New Age : Interrelationships of Acoela and Nemertodermatida and the Early Evolution of Bilateria

    Author : Andreas Wallberg; Ulf Jondelius; Mikael Thollesson; Graham Budd; Gonzalo Giribet; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Acoela; Nemertodermatida; Bilateria; Metazoa; evolution; phylogenetic inferrence; ancestral reconstruction; taxon sampling; microRNA; Systematics and phylogenetics; Systematik och fylogeni; systematisk zoologi; Systematic Zoology;

    Abstract : Deciphering the rapid emergence of bilaterian animals around the time of the Cambrian Explosion and reconstructing the interrelationships of animal groups have long been two of the most elusive problems in Zoology. This thesis concerns the phylogenetic interrelationships within and among Acoela and Nemertodermatida, two groups of small worms that are believed to be basal bilaterians and which may provide important clues for understanding the early evolution of animals. 3. 3. From Fossil To Fact : The Denisova Discovery as Science in Action

    Author : Mattis Karlsson; Eva Hemmungs Wirtén; Martin Fredriksson; Andreas Nyblom; Staffan Bergwik; Linköpings universitet; []

    Abstract : From Fossil to Fact: The Denisova Discovery as Science in Action is a study of the (actor) networked relations that make and shape science through the case of the discovery of the Denisova human.In 2010, Nature published the article “The complete mitochondrial DNA genome of an unknown hominin from southern Siberia”, the article revealed the results of mtDNA sequencing of a fossilised finger bone excavated from the Denisova Cave in Siberia, showing that the fossil belonged to an individual of a previously unknown type of humans, the Denisovans. 4. 4. Population Genetic Analyses of Natal Dispersal and Substructure in Three Bird Species

    Author : Tobias Sahlman; Jan Ekman; Jacob Höglund; Ben J. Hatchwell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Ecology; Perisoreus infaustus; Gallinago media; Lagopus muta; relatedness; philopatry; biased dispersal; phylogeography; microsatellite; mitochondrial DNA; Ekologi;

    Abstract : Genetic variation within and among populations is a result of past and ongoing processes. Among the most important of such processes are dispersal, habitat fragmentation and selection. This thesis use neutral genetic variation as a tool to investigate these processes in three bird species. READ MORE

  5. 5. Organization and regulation of mitochondrial gene expression

    Author : Roger Salvatori; Martin Ott; Benoit Kornmann; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mitochondria; mitochondrial gene expression; post-transcriptional regulation; mitochondrial ribosome; protein-protein proximity; BioID; feedback loop; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : Mitochondria possess their own genome, remnant of the ancestral eubacterial endosymbiont DNA. This mitochondrial genome encodes mostly few key subunits of the respiratory chain. In order to synthesize these few proteins, mitochondria contain a complete gene expression machinery. READ MORE
