  1. 1. Nasal administration of compounds active in the central nervous system : Exploring the olfactory system

    Author : Maria Dahlin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacy; Nasal administration; olfactory pathway; cerebrospinal fluid; autoradiography; FARMACI; PHARMACY; FARMACI; farmaceutisk farmakologi; Pharmaceutical Pharmacology;

    Abstract : The nasal administration of drugs offers advantages over administration by intravenous injection. Drugs can be rapidly absorbed through the nasal mucosa, resulting in a rapid onset of action, and also avoiding degradation in the gastrointestinal tract and first-pass metabolism in the liver. Abstract : This thesis deals with machine learning techniques for the extraction of structure and the analysis of the vertebrate olfactory pathway based on related methods. Some of its main contributions are summarized below. READ MORE

  3. 3. Factors influencing the turnover of olfactory receptor neurons

    Author : Maja-Lena Deckner; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; rat; olfactory bulb; olfactory epithelium; axotomy; regeneration; apoptosis; BBB; VEGF; blood vessels; trophic factor; BDNF; trkB; tenascin;

    Abstract : The olfactory system has a striking capacity for neuronal plasticity throughout life and the olfactory epithelium is able to generate both neuronal and non-neuronal cells in the normal adult animal as well as after experimental injury. In contrast to primary sensory neurons, olfactory axons are able to cross the border between the PNS and CNS in the olfactory bulb after transection in the adult animal. READ MORE

  4. 4. Olfaction in Desert Locusts- Anatomy, Function and Plasticity of the Central Olfactory System

    Author : Rickard Ignell; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; hist; serotonin; immunocytochemistry; juvenile hormone; development; olfactometer; intracellular recording; evolution; projection neuron; receptor neuron; antennal lobe; aggregation pheromone; neuroethology; olfaction; Desert locust; Schistocerca gregaria; Ecology; Ekologi; Entomology; plant parasitology; Entomologi; växtparasitologi; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : The anatomy, function and plasticity of the primary olfactory centre, the antennal lobe (AL), of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria was investigated using a number of neuroanatomical and neurophysiological methods. Anatomical characterisation of the AL in a number of orthopteran species made it possible to deduce a model concerning the evolution of microglomeruli. READ MORE

  5. 5. Assessment of precursor cell proliferation in normal and injured adult mammalian brains

    Author : Hong Zhu; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : ; 6-OHDA; astrocytes; cell proliferation; neural stem cells; neurogenesis; precursor cells; seizure; SVZ-OB pathway;

    Abstract : In the adult mammalian brain, new neurons are generated from neural stem cells (NSCs) which reside in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricle wall and in the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the dentate gyrus (DG) in the hippocampus. The biology of persistent NSCs in the adult brain is poorly understood. READ MORE
