  1. 16. BMP - a key signaling molecule in specification and morphogenesis of sensory structures

    Author : Vijay Kumar Jidigam; Lena Gunhaga; Jonas von Hofsten; Richard A. Lang; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; BMP signaling; Placode morphogenesis; lens; retina; olfactory; otic; Developmental Biology; miljömedicinsk utvecklingsbiologi;

    Abstract : Cranial placodes are transient thickenings of the vertebrate embryonic head ectoderm that will give rise to sensory (olfactory, lens, and otic) and non-sensory (hypophyseal) components of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). In most vertebrate embryos, these four sensory placodes undergo invagination. READ MORE

  2. 17. Tissue-Selective Activation and Toxicity of Substituted Dichlorobenzenes : Studies on the Mechanism of Cell Death in the Olfactory Mucosa

    Author : Anna Franzén; Eva Brittebo; Ingvar Brandt; Olavi Pelkonen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Toxicology; tissue-selective toxicity; bioactivation; olfactory mucosa; substituted dichlorobenzenes; Bowman s glands; sustentacular cells; ER stress; Grp78; caspase-12; caspase-3; CYP2A5; protein adduction; nasal toxicity; Toxikologi; Toxicology; Toxikologi;

    Abstract : The nasal passages are constantly exposed to both air- and bloodborne foreign compounds. In particular, the olfactory mucosa is demonstrated to be susceptible to a variety of drugs and chemicals. READ MORE

  3. 18. Modeling prediction and pattern recognition in the early visual and olfactory systems

    Author : Bernhard Kaplan; Lansner Anders; Fred Hamker; KTH; []

    Abstract : Our senses are our mind's window to the outside world and determine how we perceive our environment.Sensory systems are complex multi-level systems that have to solve a multitude of tasks that allow us to understand our surroundings. READ MORE

  4. 19. Activity-regulated retinoic acid signaling in olfactory sensory neurons

    Author : Hande Login; Staffan Bohm; Mattias Alenius; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mouse olfactory system; RA; neuronal activity; CNG; Cyp26B1; BACE1; Kirrel-2; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : The aim of the studies included in the thesis is to better understand the interplay between neuronal activity-dependent gene regulation and the bioactive vitamin A metabolite all-trans-retinoic acid (RA) during postnatal development, refinement and maintenance of precise neuronal connectivity using the olfactory sensory neuron (OSN) in the olfactory epithelium (OE) of genetically modified mice as a model. We show that:Inhibition of RA receptor (RAR)-mediated transcription in OSNs reduces expression of the olfactory cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) ion channel, which is required for odorant receptor (OR)-mediated stimulus transduction. 5. 20. Early development of the olfactory placode and early rostrocaudal patterning of the caudal neural tube

    Author : Esther Maier; Lena Gunhaga; Fernando Giraldez; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; olfactory placode; caudal neural tube; Wnt; FGF; RA; BMP; Notch; patterning; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : The development of the nervous system is a complex process. Cell divisions, cell differentiation and signalling interactions must be tightly regulated. To comprehend the mature nervous system, we have to understand its assembly during development. READ MORE
