  1. 1. Design of Oligosaccharide Libraries to Characterize Heparan Sulfate – Protein Interactions

    Author : Sindhulakshmi Kurup; Dorothe Spillmann; Ulf Lindahl; Jacob Vandenborn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biochemistry; heparan sulfate; oligosaccharide; phage display antibodies; Biokemi;

    Abstract : Heparan sulfates (HSs) are a class of anionic carbohydrate chains found at cell surfaces and in the extracellular matrix where they interact with a number of proteins. HS is characterized by extreme structural heterogeneity, and has been implicated in a number of biological phenomenon like embryogenesis, morphogen gradient formation and signalling of growth factors such as FGF, PDGF etc. READ MORE

  2. 2. Role of Heparan Sulfate Structure in FGF-Receptor Interactions and Signaling

    Author : Nadja Jastrebova; Dorothe Spillmann; Ulf Lindahl; John T. Gallagher; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biochemistry; heparan sulfate; oligosaccharide; fibroblast growth factor; fibroblast growth factor signaling; Biokemi;

    Abstract : Heparan sulfate (HS) belongs to the glycosaminoglycan family of polysaccharides and is found attached to protein cores on cell surfaces and in the extracellular matrix. The HS backbone consists of alternating hexuronic acid and glucosamine units and undergoes a number of modification reactions creating HS chains with alternating highly and low modified domains, where high degree of modification correlates with high negative charge. 3. 3. Prediction of 3D structures of oligosaccharides. Methodological development and studies on saccharide antigens of interest for vaccine design

    Author : Jimmy Rosen; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Oligosaccharide; conformation; 3D structure; O-antigen; Shigella dysenteriae; Escherichia coli; Burkholderia cepacia; Schistosoma mansoni; filtered systematic search; genetic algorithm;

    Abstract : This thesis presents 3D structure predictions of five immunologically active surfacepolysaccharides of pathogens, which are of interest as targets for development of glycoconjugatevaccines. Furthermore it describes two methods which have been used for theconformational predictionsThe Shigella dysenteriae type 2 Oantigenwas predicted to form a compact helicalstructure with three repeating pentasaccharide units per turn. 4. 4. Intestinal mucins 'soluble and insoluble problems'

    Author : Annkatrin Herrmann; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; colorectal carcinoma; pulse labelling; organ culture; glycopeptide; small intestine; colon; glycoprotein complex; insoluble; muc2; MUC2; Mucin; mucus; carbohydrate; oligosaccharide.; Gastro-enterology; Gastroenterologi;

    Abstract : Highly glycosylated glycoproteins – mucins – are the major constituents of the mucus layer and glycocalyx that cover mucosal surfaces. Twelve human mucin genes have been identified, and the mucins may be divided into those that are membraneassociated and those that are secreted. READ MORE

  5. 5. O-glycosylation of intestinal and respiratory mucins in health and disease

    Author : Jessica Holmén Larsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mucins; oligosaccharide; O-linked glycosylation; mass spectrometry; MUC2; Fut2 enzyme; Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection; Cystic Fibrosis; Ulcerative colitis;

    Abstract : Mucins are large glycoproteins with a diverse O-glycosylation constituting up to 80% of the total mucin mass. The mucus layer covering the epithelial cells of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tract is largely made up of gel-forming mucins. READ MORE
