  1. 1. Ontogeny and Population Biology of a Sex-Limited Colour Polymorphism

    Author : Jessica Abbott; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; embryologi; ontogeni; animal morphology; embryology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Damselflies; Colour polymorphism; Development; Frequency-dependence; Morphology; growth animal ; ontogeny; Animal anatomy; Development biology; Djurs anatomi och morfologi; Population divergence; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : This study has involved investigation of number of populations of the damselfly Ischnura elegans over several years, looking at frequency changes over time, morphological differences between the sexes and the morphs, differences in growth rate and development time, differences in fecundity between the morphs, and genetic differentiation between populations. 2. 2. Trophic interactions and behaviour : Studies relevant to a Baltic Sea biomanipulation

    Author : Per B. Holliland; Sture Hansson; Elena Gorokhova; Peter Tiselius; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; zooplankton; non-indigenous species; selectivity; food web; rearing environment; fish stocking; Sander lucioperca; diel vertical migration; ontogeny; ovigerous; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : The main theme of this thesis is the interactions of animals with the environment and each other. The thesis was written within the framework of a biomanipulation project “Pikeperch in Himmerfjärden”. READ MORE

  3. 3. Plant-Herbivore Interactions and Evolutionary Potential of Natural Arabidopsis lyrata Populations

    Author : Adriana Puentes; Jon Ågren; Jenny Hagenblad; Roosa Leimu Brown; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plant defenses; leaf herbivory; floral herbivory; ontogeny; G-matrix; trade-offs; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I combined field, greenhouse and common-garden experiments to examine the ecological and evolutionary consequences of plant-herbivore interactions and the genetic architecture of fitness-related traits in the insect-pollinated, self-incompatible, perennial herb Arabidopsis lyrata. More specifically, I examined (1) whether damage to leaves and inflorescences affects plant fitness non-additively, (2) whether trichome production is associated with a cost in terms of reduced tolerance to leaf and inflorescence damage, (3) whether young plant resistance to a specialist insect herbivore varies among populations, and (4) whether the evolution of flowering time, floral display and rosette size is constrained by lack of genetic variation or by genetic correlations among traits. 4. 4. Trilobites from the Middle and Upper Ordovician Andersön Shale Formation in Jämtland and the equivalent Killeröd Formation in Skåne, Sweden

    Author : Kristina Månsson; Berggrundsgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fysisk geografi; Geologi; physical geography; Geology; Sweden; Jämtland; Skåne; Upper Ordovician; Middle Ordovician; Killeröd Formation; Andersön Shale Formation; ontogeny; biostratigraphy; Trilobita; taxonomy; trilobite associations; Systematic zoology; zoogeography; Zoologisk systematik; djurgeografi; Development biology; growth animal ; embryology; Utvecklingsbiologi; ontogeni; embryologi;

    Abstract : Trilobites from the Middle and Upper Ordovician Andersön Shale Formation in Jämtland, central Sweden, and the Middle Ordovician Killeröd Formation in Skåne (Scania), southern Sweden, are revised and discussed. These formations have several genera and a few species in common, e.g. READ MORE

  5. 5. The balance between sex and asex: evolutionary genetic studies of reproductive variation in Allium vineale

    Author : Alf Ceplitis; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ontogeny; growth animal ; Allium vineale; Development biology; evolution; sexual reproduction; reproductive systems; embryology; Utvecklingsbiologi; ontogeni; embryologi; Genetics; cytogenetics; Genetik; cytogenetik;

    Abstract : Evolutionary theory predicts a disadvantage to sexual reproduction. This manifests itself either by the higher growth rate of asexual females in a dioecious species, or by the higher transmission rate of a gene conferring asexual female function to its carriers in a hermaphrodite species.
