  1. 1. Generation and Applications of Picosecond Pulses in High-Capacity Fiber Optic Systems

    Author : Jie Li; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; nonlinear distortion; optical pulse shaping; dispersion-management; eye-diagram; cross-phase modulation; optical sampling; optical fiber applications; multiplexing; parametric amplification; demultiplexing; optical pulses; fiber optical communication; nonlinear systems; time division multiplexing; four-wave mixing; polarization-mode dispersion; optical signal processing; fiber optical nonlinearities; fiber ring laser; soliton robustness; mode-locking; optical filters; networks;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with short optical pulse generation from actively mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber ring lasers (ML-EFRL) and their applications in all-optical signal processing (optical sampling and switching) and transmission experiments for high-capacity fiber optic systems. In future ultra-high bit-rate optical time division multiplexed (OTDM) systems, one of the key requirements is to develop reliable optical pulse sources that can generate high quality optical pulses. Abstract : The topic of this thesis is the development of devices for telecom applications based on poled optical fibers. The focus is on a specific function, optical switching/modulation. Some of the most important results are summarized below. Optical switching at telecom wavelengths (1. READ MORE

  4. 4. Applications of monolithic fiber interferometers and actively controlled fibers

    Author : Patrik Rugeland; Fredrik Laurell; Walter Margulis; Miguel Andrés; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fiber; fiber Bragg grating; micro-structured fiber; add drop multiplexer; fiber interferometer; microwave photonics; temperature sensor;

    Abstract : The objective of this thesis was to develop applications of monolithic fiber devices and actively controlled fibers. A special twin-core fiber known as a ‘Gemini’ fiber was used to construct equal arm-length fiber interferometers, impervious to temperature and mechanical perturbations. READ MORE

  5. 5. Frequency Transfer Techniques and Applications in Fiber Optic Communication Systems

    Author : Sven-Christian Ebenhag; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []

    Abstract : Modern society is dependent on communications and the developments of these increases constantly through a seemingly endless demand for communication services and thereby synchronization and time. This is confirmed by a vast range of research on communications, irrespective of technology and protocol. READ MORE
