11. Nonlinear materials for optical power limiting : characterization and modelling
Abstract : High power laser pulses can be a threat to optical sensors, including the human eye. Traditionally this threat has been alleviated by colour filters that block radiation in chosen wavelength ranges. READ MORE

12. Electro-Optical Na0.5K0.5NbO3 Films
Abstract : Ferroelectric oxides are a group of advanced electronic materials with a wide variety of properties useful in applications such as memory devices, resonators and filters, infrared sensors, microelectromechanical systems, and optical waveguides and modulators.Among the oxide perovskite-structured ferroelectric thin film materials, sodium potassium niobate or Na0. 13. Fibre Bragg Gratings : Characterization, Realization and Simulation
Abstract : The main topic of this thesis is realization and characterization of fibre Bragg gratings. A novel versatile grating fabrication technique is developed and a number of gratings are realized, showing the potential of the system. READ MORE

14. Attosecond Optical and Electronic Wave Packets
Abstract : When a low-frequency laser pulse is focused to a high intensity in a gas, the electric field of the laser may become comparable to, or even exceed, the electric field between the electrons and the nucleus in the atom. Under such conditions, through a process known as high-order harmonic generation, bursts of extreme ultraviolet radiation may be emitted, with durations in the attosecond domain (1 as = 10^{-18} s), which is the time-scale of electronic processes. 15. Electronic, Transport, and Optical Properties of Broken-Gap Heterostructures
Abstract : This thesis examines the physical properties of broken-gap heterostructures using a multiband k.p model and self-consistent calculations. Broken-gap heterostructures, made from InAs, GaSb, and AlSb, are characterized by a special band alignment with an overlap between the InAs conduction band and the GaSb valence band. READ MORE
