1. Generation and Applications of Picosecond Pulses in High-Capacity Fiber Optic Systems
Abstract : This thesis deals with short optical pulse generation from actively mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber ring lasers (ML-EFRL) and their applications in all-optical signal processing (optical sampling and switching) and transmission experiments for high-capacity fiber optic systems. In future ultra-high bit-rate optical time division multiplexed (OTDM) systems, one of the key requirements is to develop reliable optical pulse sources that can generate high quality optical pulses. 2. Fiber optic parametric amplifiers in single and multi wavelength applications
Abstract : This thesis describes fiber optical parametricamplifiers (FOPAs) used in single- and multi-wavelength channel applications. The FOPA was operated as a pulse source in optical transmission systems at bit rates of 10-160 Gb/s. It was evaluated in terms of bit error rate after transmission with link lengths up to 650 km. READ MORE

3. Optical parametric amplification with periodically poled KTiOPO4
Abstract : This thesis explores the use of engineered nonlinear crystals from the KTiOPO4 (KTP) family as the gain material in optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs), with the aim to achieve more knowledge about the benefits and limitations of these devices. The work aims further at extending the possible applications of OPAs by constructing and investigating several efficient and well performing amplifiers. READ MORE

4. VCSEL and Integration Techniques for Wavelength-Multiplexed Optical Interconnects
Abstract : GaAs-based vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are dominating short-reach optical interconnects (OIs) due to their high modulation speed, low power consumption, circular output beam and low fabrication cost. Such OIs provide the high bandwidth connectivity needed for interconnecting servers and switches in data centers. READ MORE

5. Photonic devices with MQW active material and waveguide gratings : modelling and characterisation
Abstract : The research work presented in this thesis deals with modelling, design and characterisation of passive and active optical waveguide devices. The rst part of the thesis is related to algorithm development and numerical modelling of planar optical waveguides and gratings using the Method of Lines (MoL). READ MORE
