1. Generation and Applications of Picosecond Pulses in High-Capacity Fiber Optic Systems
Abstract : This thesis deals with short optical pulse generation from actively mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber ring lasers (ML-EFRL) and their applications in all-optical signal processing (optical sampling and switching) and transmission experiments for high-capacity fiber optic systems. In future ultra-high bit-rate optical time division multiplexed (OTDM) systems, one of the key requirements is to develop reliable optical pulse sources that can generate high quality optical pulses. 2. Layered optical networks : implications to switching and transmission
Abstract : With the aim of supporting and enhancing high-capacitycommunication networks, such as telephony, Internet and others, this work has investigated:· transmission gains withtime-slotted optical communication, · performance ofoptical add/drop multiplexers (OADMs) and optical crossconnects(OXCs), · OXC networks serving Internet Protocol(IP)-routers, · packet hop reductions in IP-controlledoptical networks, · a simple optical neighbour discoverymethod, · economics of complementing a client network withan optical express layer.Time-slotting was shown to enable bi-directionaltransmission at the same frequency and multiwavelengthtransmission over dispersion-shifted fibre. 3. Dynamic Resource Provisioning and Survivability Strategies in Optical Networks
Abstract : Optical networks based on Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology show many clear benefits in terms of high capacity, flexibility and low power consumption. All these benefits make WDM networks the preferred choice for today’s and future transports solutions which are strongly driven by a plethora of emerging online services. READ MORE

4. Design, analysis and simultion for optical access and wide-area networks
Abstract : Due to the tremendous growth of traffic volume caused by both exponential increase of number of Internet users and continual emergence of new bandwidth demanding applications, high capacity networks are required in order to satisfactorily handle the extremely large amount of traffic. Hence, optical fiber communication is the key technology for the network infrastructure. READ MORE

5. Provisioning Strategies for Transparent Optical Networks Considering Transmission Quality, Security, and Energy Efficiency
Abstract : The continuous growth of traffic demand driven by the brisk increase in number of Internet users and emerging online services creates new challenges for communication networks. The latest advances in Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology make it possible to build Transparent Optical Networks (TONs) which are expected to be able to satisfy this rapidly growing capacity demand.
