  1. 1. Spectral Management in Quasi-Phase-Matched Parametric Devices

    Author : Mikael Tiihonen; Fredrik Laurell; Jean-Jaques Zondy; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; optical parametric devices; nonlinear optics; ultraviolet generation; mid-infrared generation; optical parametric oscillator; optical parametric generator; optical parametric amplifier; Optical physics; Optisk fysik;

    Abstract : Nonlinear optical interaction in quasi-phase-matched structures opens up unique possibilities to build compact and efficient parametric devices such as optical parametric oscillators, generators, and amplifiers with tailored spectral properties. The focus of this thesis is on novel parametric interactions with periodically-poled KTiOPO4 (PPKTP) as the parametric gain medium. READ MORE

  2. 2. Fiber optic parametric amplifiers in single and multi wavelength applications

    Author : Thomas Torounidis; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fiber optical parametric amplifiers; optical time division multiplexing; highly nonlinear fiber; pulse generation; wavelength division multiplexing; optical time domain reflectometry.; four-wave mixing; cross-gain saturation; optical gain and bandwidth; transmission;

    Abstract : This thesis describes fiber optical parametricamplifiers (FOPAs) used in single- and multi-wavelength channel applications.The FOPA was operated as a pulse source in optical transmission systems at bit rates of 10-160 Gb/s. It was evaluated in terms of bit error rate after transmission with link lengths up to 650 km. READ MORE

  3. 3. Quasi-Phasematched nonlinear processes in KTiOPO4 isomorphs

    Author : Anna Fragemann; KTH; []
    Keywords : nonlinear optics; optical parametric oscillator; optical parametric amplifier; KTiOPO4; RbTiOPO4; quasi-phasematched; electric field poling;

    Abstract : This thesis explores the use of nonlinear crystals from theKTiOPO4(KTP) family with the aim to extend the possibleapplications for laser sources and to gain more knowledge aboutthe material’s benefits and limits. The work focussed onoptical parametric oscillators (OPOs) and optical parametricamplifiers (OPAs), which employ second order nonlinearprocesses. READ MORE

  4. 4. Characterization of Phase-Sensitive and Phase-Insensitive Fiber Optical Parametric Amplifiers

    Author : Carl Peter Lundström; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fiber optical parametric amplifier;

    Abstract : The topic of this thesis is fiber optical parametric ampliers (FOPA). A unique feature of such ampliers is that they can operate in both phase-insensitive and phase-sensitive mode. The latter offers the potential of amplification without any added noise. READ MORE

  5. 5. Optical Transmission Systems Based on Phase-Sensitive Amplifiers

    Author : Samuel L I Olsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; optical injection locking; fiber nonlinearities; optical fiber communication; fiber nonlinearity mitigation; four-wave mixing; fiber optic parametric amplification; low-noise amplification; phase-sensitive amplification; fibre optics;

    Abstract : The capacity and reach of today's long-haul fiber optical communication systems is limited by amplifier noise and fiber nonlinearities. Conventional, phase-insensitiveamplifiers (PIAs), have a quantum limited noise figure (NF) of 3 dB at high gain, meaning that with a shot-noise limited input signal the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)is degraded by at least 3 dB.
