1. Surface-normal multiple quantum well electroabsorption modulators : for optical signal processing and asymmetric free-space communication
Abstract : Electroabsorption is the physical phenomenon by which the absorption of light in a medium can be controlled by applying an electric field. The Quantum–Confined Stark Effect, which makes the absorption band–edge in quantum wells very field–dependent, together with the strong absorption peak provided by excitons, are the physical foundations for the success of electroabsorption modulators based on quantum well structures in telecommunication networks. 2. Mid-infrared photonic devices for on-chip optical gas sensing
Abstract : Gas detection is crucial in a wide range of fields and applications, such as safety and process control in the industry, atmospheric sciences, and breath diagnostics. Optical gas sensing offers some key advantages, compared to other sensing methods such as electrochemical and semiconductor sensing: high specificity, fast response, and minimal drift. READ MORE

3. Integrated Optical Slot-Waveguide Ring Resonator Sensor Arrays for Lab-on-Chip Applications
Abstract : This thesis treats the development of an integrated optical sensor array. The sensors are slot-waveguide ring resonators, integrated with on-chip surface grating couplers and light splitters, for alignment tolerant, real-time, refractive index sensing, and label-free biosensing. 4. Photonic MEMS for optical information technologies
Abstract : Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) combine hundreds of optical components on a chip, and can enable fast communications, high-performance computing, and improved sensing. PICs, made by miniaturized optical waveguides, require many reconfigurable elements to enable programmable functionalities and to compensate for fabrication variations and environmental factors. 5. Grating-Coupled Surface-Emitting Lasers -- Circular and Unstable-Resonator Geometries
Abstract : This thesis deals with research in the field of grating-coupled surface-emitting lasers. The emphasis has been to study the modal behavior of lasers with two different resonator geometries: circular resonators and tapered unstable-resonators. READ MORE
