  1. 1. Generation and Applications of Picosecond Pulses in High-Capacity Fiber Optic Systems

    Author : Jie Li; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : nonlinear distortion; optical pulse shaping; dispersion-management; eye-diagram; cross-phase modulation; optical sampling; optical fiber applications; multiplexing; parametric amplification; demultiplexing; optical pulses; fiber optical communication; nonlinear systems; time division multiplexing; four-wave mixing; polarization-mode dispersion; optical signal processing; fiber optical nonlinearities; fiber ring laser; soliton robustness; mode-locking; optical filters; networks;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with short optical pulse generation from actively mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber ring lasers (ML-EFRL) and their applications in all-optical signal processing (optical sampling and switching) and transmission experiments for high-capacity fiber optic systems. In future ultra-high bit-rate optical time division multiplexed (OTDM) systems, one of the key requirements is to develop reliable optical pulse sources that can generate high quality optical pulses. 2. 2. Cavity enhanced optical sensing

    Author : Isak Silander; Ove Axner; Aleksandra Foltynowicz; Jong Chow; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Optical resonators; Fiber Laser; Parametric oscillators; Optical frequency comb; Infrared; Spectroscopy heterodyne; Spectroscopy molecular; Absorption; Dispersion; Lineshapes; Optical standards and testing; Refractivety measurements;

    Abstract : An optical cavity comprises a set of mirrors between which light can be reflected a number of times. The selectivity and stability of optical cavities make them extremely useful as frequency references or discriminators. READ MORE

  3. 3. High-capacity short-reach optical communications

    Author : Rui Lin; Jiajia Chen; Lena Wosinska; Yu Yu; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; optical communication; optical frequency comb; radio-over-fiber; optical interconnect; fiberoptisk kommunikation; optisk frekvenskams; Radio-över –fiber; passiva optiska interconnects; Informations- och kommunikationsteknik; Information and Communication Technology;

    Abstract : The global traffic is experiencing an exponential growth posing severe challenges to the communication networks in terms of capacity. As a future-proof technology fiber communication is widely implemented in different network segments, which can be categorized by transmission distance as long-haul and short-reach. READ MORE

  5. 5. Ultracold atoms in optical potentials : from noise-induced transport to superfluidity

    Author : Martin Zelan; Claude Dion; Sile Nic Chormaic; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Brownian motors; noise-induced transport; superfluidity; ultracold atoms; optical potentials; optical lattices; laser coooling; fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : In this thesis, both experimental studies and numerical simulations of ultracold atoms in optical potentials are presented in a collection of nine scientific papers. In particular, noise-induced transport in dissipative optical lattices and superfluid properties of Bose-Einstein condensates have been studied. READ MORE
