  1. 1. Generation and Applications of Picosecond Pulses in High-Capacity Fiber Optic Systems

    Author : Jie Li; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; nonlinear distortion; optical pulse shaping; dispersion-management; eye-diagram; cross-phase modulation; optical sampling; optical fiber applications; multiplexing; parametric amplification; demultiplexing; optical pulses; fiber optical communication; nonlinear systems; time division multiplexing; four-wave mixing; polarization-mode dispersion; optical signal processing; fiber optical nonlinearities; fiber ring laser; soliton robustness; mode-locking; optical filters; networks;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with short optical pulse generation from actively mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber ring lasers (ML-EFRL) and their applications in all-optical signal processing (optical sampling and switching) and transmission experiments for high-capacity fiber optic systems. In future ultra-high bit-rate optical time division multiplexed (OTDM) systems, one of the key requirements is to develop reliable optical pulse sources that can generate high quality optical pulses. 2. 2. Daylighting Systems : Development of Techniques for Optical Characterization and Performance Evaluation

    Author : Annica M. Nilsson; Arne Roos; Claes-Göran Granqvist; Marie-Claude Dubois; Michael Köhl; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Optical spectroscopy; integrating sphere; ray tracing; light scattering; window physics; Venetian blinds; core daylighting; optical characterization; Teknisk fysik; Engineering Science;

    Abstract : Successful integration of daylighting systems requires the ability to predict their performance for given climates. In this dissertation, a bottom-up approach is applied to evaluate the optical performance of a selection of daylighting systems. READ MORE

  3. 3. Coherent Optical Transmission Systems : Performance and Coding Aspects

    Author : Miu Yoong Leong; Sergei Popov; Gunnar Jacobsen; Enrico Forestieri; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Since the invention of fiber-optic systems in the 1970s, user demand has driven innovation forward, and each new generation of products has achieved higher data rates than its predecessor. Today, the most promising approach for further increasing data rates is coherent transmission with multi-level modulation and digital signal processing (DSP). READ MORE

  4. 4. Implementation and Evaluation of Signal Processing Circuits for Optical Communication

    Author : Erik Börjeson; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Application-Specific Integrated Circuits; Fiber-Optic Communication; Carrier Phase Recovery; Digital Signal Processing; Communication Systems; Adaptive Equalization;

    Abstract : The digital signal processing (DSP) circuits used in the fiber-optic communication links that make up the backbone of the Internet can be a significant contributor the over-all power dissipation of a link. As the number of connected users and their bandwidth requirements are expected to continue to grow over the coming years, the development of power-efficient high-throughput DSP systems is a critical factor in enabling this growth. 5. 5. Aspects of Power Consumption in Coherent Fiber-Optical Communication Systems

    Author : Lars Lundberg; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; optical frequency comb; Fiber-optical communication; power consumption; carrier-recovery; Raman amplification; energy-efficiency; optical amplifier; digital signal processing; coherent detection; erbium-doped fiber amplifier; phase-tracking;

    Abstract : The power consumption of coherent fiber-optical communication systems is becoming increasingly important, for both environmental and economical reasons. The data traffic on the Internet is increasing at a faster pace than that at which optical network equipment is becoming more energy efficient, which means that the overall power consumption of the Internet is increasing.
